Facebook says Instagram Stories now more popular than Snapchat

The social networking service’s photo app, purchased for $1 billion five years ago, has slowly been adding Snapchat-like features. And Facebook says it’s working.
It’s more than just another selfie.
Facebook’s been busy integrating features made popular by Snapchat into its Instagram photo sharing app, and now it says those efforts are paying off.
The social networking giant said it counted more than 200 million people using Instagram Stories, a feature where people can publish a series of photos and videos that disappear after 24 hours. That’s more than the 158 million users Snapchat counted across its entire app at the end of last year. Snapchat didn’t respond to a request for comment about the numbers.
Facebook continues to borrow ideas from Snapchat and other apps, adding new features like location-based digital stickers you can put on your posts (think a sticker celebrating you’re in Chicago) and even the ability to create a mashup of multiple selfies.
Facebook bought Instagram for $1 billion five years ago .

Microsoft's Project Scorpio is coming to E3 on June 11

Invites are out for Microsoft’s press event at the massive video game trade show, where we hope to get all the details on its newest console.
We’ve already gotten a sneak peek at what’s under the hood of Project Scorpio , Microsoft ‘s code name for its next living room game console, thanks to a recent release of spec and hardware info.
The final product, first teased last year , is now expected to be shown off at the annual E3 video game industry trade show, according to press invites sent out by Microsoft. The company’s E3 2017 press briefing is scheduled for June 11, at 2 p.m. PT, at its usual home at the Galen Center on USC’s Los Angeles campus.
Exactly what information will be announced is unclear, but it should hopefully include the system’s final specs, physical appearance, price, release date and official name.

The $60 (£50 or AU$100) all-in-one system has 30 built-in NES games and became one of 2016’s hottest holiday gifts. Nevertheless, Nintendo of America on Thursday provided a statement to IGN saying the NES Classic is being discontinued in North America.
It hasn’t been confirmed whether the NES Classic will be discontinued worldwide. Nintendo didn’t respond to a request for comment.
Nintendo told IGN that the “NES Classic Edition wasn’t intended to be an ongoing, long-term product. However, due to high demand, we did add extra shipments to our original plans. ”
Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime talked to CNET about the NES Classic’s shortages last year, but until now it wasn’t clear the mini console would ever stop being made. Nintendo executives told CNET last month that more NES Classic systems would be arriving soon, ending shortages.
The NES Classic is currently selling for about $160 on Amazon through third-party sellers, which has been common since last Christmas. Nintendo had already sold 1.5 million as of February.
To those looking for an NES Classic, which has been continually sold out since its debut, this is bound to be disappointing. My son loves the NES Classic more than the Nintendo Switch. But therein could lie the point: the NES Classic’s affordable collection of retro games is an alternative to the Nintendo Switch, an equally hard-to-find $300 device that will launch its own paid online service with access to NES and SNES games this fall.

One of the world’s leading experts in artificial intelligence is officially on the market, and he says he wants to advance AI beyond the tech industry.
Andrew Ng , a leading figure in the world of artificial intelligence, is leaving his post as chief scientist at China’s Baidu and says he wants to find ways of advancing AI beyond the technology world.
Ng is known for playing a leading role in formulating the AI strategy of both Baidu and Google. He says he is leaving the Chinese company on good terms and simply wants to find a new challenge. “I’ve decided to step away from this role while everything is going well and look at some other things,” he told MIT Technology Review.
“I don’t know precisely what I’ll do, but I think AI offers a lot of opportunities, not just at big companies like Baidu but for entrepreneurs, and for advancing basic research,” Ng added. “I plan to spend some time looking at other opportunities to use AI to help people.”
Ng is well respected within the field for his technical expertise in machine learning, but also for finding innovative ways of applying AI.
After joining Baidu, China’s leading Internet search company, in 2014, Ng helped develop an AI-first strategy. He oversaw the creation of several new AI-focused research groups and led a team of more than 1,300 researchers, engineers, and other staff, including the Silicon Valley AI Lab in California.
Under Ng, Baidu researchers made fundamental advances in speech recognition (see “ 10 Breakthrough Technologies: Conversational Interfaces ”). Within the past year, the department has also spawned two new business units for the Chinese market: one dedicated to automated driving, another to providing software for voice-controlled devices. Baidu is now leveraging its AI technology in banking, health care, call-center support, and more.
China’s tech companies have, at times, been accused of copying their Western counterparts. But a growing focus on fundamental research, as embodied by Baidu’s strategy, is starting to change that perception.

I picked up Ultimate Epic Battle Simulator last night and spent a couple hours fiddling with it. There are good times to be had there, and also a lot of potential to put some hurt on your PC. The battlefield I laid out with over 50,000 units made my i7-7700K cry. The frame rate sometimes dipped below 10 (even though my GTX 980 Ti was pretty “bored” much of the time). That said, performance was perfectly acceptable under less extreme circumstances, and the game is quite an entertaining sandbox to play in. I suspect it’s also a great way to show off the computing prowess of some gerbils’ shiny new eight-core CPUs. At any rate, there are certainly worse things to spend $15 on.

Dazu begab er sich am Gründonnerstag nach Paliano bei Rom, wo er in der Kapelle
der Justizvollzugsanstalt mit 70 Häftlingen den Abendmahlsgottesdienst feierte. Beim
“privaten” Besuch des Kirchenoberhaupts im Gefängnis waren keine
Kameras zugelassen, wie der Vatikan mitteilte. In der Haftanstalt gut 60
Kilometer südöstlich von Rom sitzen insbesondere Mafia-Aussteiger ein, deren lange
Haftstrafen wegen ihrer Zusammenarbeit mit der Justiz verkürzt wurden.
Jesus habe seinen Jüngern die Füße gewaschen, um ihnen zu zeigen, dass er
sie bis zum Ende liebe, sagte Franziskus laut Radio Vatikan zu den Häftlingen.
Er wolle es nun ebenso machen, wie ein Pfarrer für seine Gläubigen.
Der Papst wusch nach
Vatikan-Angaben die Füße von zwölf Gefangenen – darunter ein Muslim, der kurz
vor der Taufe steht, sowie drei Frauen. Zwei der Häftlinge sind zu
lebenslangen Gefängnisstrafen verurteilt. Die Gefangenen überreichten dem Pontifex danach Geschenke aus
eigener Herstellung: Biogemüse aus dem Gefängnisgarten, Kuchen und Kreuze aus
Olivenholz.

Die chinesische Zentralbank hat nach 13-tägigem Stillhalten wieder mit Offenmarktgeschäften begonnen, um den Kurs der Landeswährung Yuan zum US-Dollar zu stärken. Die Interventionen ereignen sich wenige Tage, nachdem der chinesische Staatspräsident Xi Jinping zu Besuch bei US-Präsident Donald Trump war. Trump ist seit dem Treffen mit Xi zu der Auffassung gelangt, dass China keine Währungsmanipulator ist.
Wie der Finanzblog Zerohedge berichtet, hat die People’s Bank of China rund 70 Milliarden Yuan (etwa 9, 5 Milliarden Euro) an Liquidität für Käufe der Landeswährung bereitgestellt. Daraufhin ist der Kurs des international gehandelten Yuan zum Dollar von etwa 6, 90 Yuan auf 6, 87 Yuan gestiegen. Das Zielband, innerhalb dessen der Kurs des im Binnenland gehandelten Yuan zum Dollar schwanken darf, erhöhte die Zentralbank um 0, 45 Prozent auf 6, 865 Yuan und damit so stark wie seit Mitte Januar nicht mehr.

Kanada bereitet die Legalisierung von Marihuana vor. Die Regierung von Ministerpräsident Justin Trudeau reichte eine Gesetzesvorlage ein, wonach Erwachsene künftig 30 Gramm Marihuana besitzen dürfen. Trudeau hatte seit langem angekündigt, die Verwendung und den Verkauf der Droge legalisieren zu wollen.
Der Gesetzesvorlage zufolge dürfen Erwachsene ab 18 Jahren vier Pflanzen zu Hause anbauen, die einzelnen Provinzen erhalten aber das Recht, die Altersgrenze gegebenenfalls zu erhöhen. Das Gesetz legt auch den Grenzwert im Blut für den Wirkstoff THC im Straßenverkehr fest. Er kann mit einem Speicheltest untersucht werden. Wer allerdings Jugendliche mit Marihuana versorgt, soll mit bis zu 14 Jahren Haft bestraft werden können. “Es ist für unsere Jugendlichen zu leicht, an Marihuana zu kommen. Wir werden das ändern”, sagte Trudeau.
Milliarden gegen den Cannabis-Konsum
Der Minister für öffentliche Sicherheit, Ralph Goodale, sagte, Ziel sei, die öffentliche Gesundheit und Sicherheit zu schützen, Cannabis von Minderjährigen fernzuhalten und dem organisierten Verbrechen eine Einnahmequelle zu entziehen. Das sei bisher nicht gelungen.
Die Polizei wende jährlich zwischen zwei und drei Milliarden Dollar (zwischen 1, 4 und 2, 1 Milliarden Euro) auf, um gegen den Cannabis-Konsum vorzugehen, “und trotzdem zählen kanadische Teenager zu den eifrigsten Konsumenten in der westlichen Welt. Wir müssen einfach besser werden”, sagte Goodale.
Das Gesetz soll bis 1. Juli 2018 in Kraft treten. Kanada wäre damit der größte Industriestaat, in dem das Verbot von Marihuana landesweit aufgehoben würde.
