Giants' Hunter Strickland received six-game suspension and Washington' s Bryce Harper four games after brawl at AT& T Park on Monday

SAN FRANCISCO — San Francisco Giants reliever Hunter Strickland has received a six-game suspension and Washington’s Bryce Harper four games for their roles in a benches-clearing brawl at AT&T Park a day earlier.
Each also has been fined an undisclosed amount, Major League Baseball announced Tuesday.
In a statement, the MLB said that the suspensions were scheduled to be effective Tuesday night, but both players planned to appeal. “Thus, the respective discipline issued to each player will be held in abeyance until the process is complete, ” according to MLB.
Strickland hit Harper in the hip with a 98 mph pitch and the Washington slugger charged the mound, wildly firing his helmet and trading punches to the head with Strickland during the Nationals’ 3-0 win Monday over the San Francisco Giants.

Harper opened up about the incident to CBSSports.com in an interview about why he rushed the mound.
“I don’t want to go on a baseball field and try to fight somebody. Especially when it’s somebody that it’s in the past, ” he said. “It’s so in the past that it’s not even relevant anymore … You can’t hesitate (after getting hit) . You either go to first base or go after him. I decided to go after him.”
“You can’t really worry about what MLB is going to do because you don’t really know, ” Harper said. “Whatever they say goes and I’m just going to worry about the four games I got and see what I can do.”
Strickland, 28, hit Harper in apparent retaliation for the two home runs Harper hit against him way back during the 2014 National League Division Series (NLDS) , a series the Giants won, CBSSports.com reports. They eventually went on to win the World Series too. Monday was the first time Strickland faced Harper since that NLDS.
“It’s just crazy that it even happened yesterday after three years to do that, ” Harper said. “I don’t know. I don’t know what was going through his mind or how upset he was the past couple of years. If he did have a problem, he could have talked to me about it.”
Strickland receiving more game suspensions than Harper might be a surprise to some, but MLB in recent memory has generally come down harder on the player they believed to be the instigator, CBSSports.com reports. Per the official MLB release, they ruled that Strickland threw at Harper intentionally, resulting in his harsher punishment.
“I’m obviously not thrilled about it, ” Strickland said. “It’s their call. We’ll go from there. Whatever they ultimately decide, I’ll own it and take the responsibility.”
Jeff Samardzija #29 of the San Francisco Giants goes after Bryce Harper #34 of the Washington Nationals after Harper charged the mound from being hit by a pitch from Hunter Strickland #60 in the top of the eighth inning at AT&T Park on Mon., May 29,2017 in San Francisco, Calif.
Harper flung his helmet and they began throwing punches, with the 6-foot-4 Strickland clocking Harper in the face. They then broke apart for a moment before squaring off again. Harper punched Strickland in the head as the benches and bullpens emptied.
Giants teammates Michael Morse and Jeff Samardzija collided hard as they tried to get between the two fighters and Harper said it could have been more serious if that hadn’t happened.
“As I was going out there, the first initial reaction is you might get blindsided by one of their players coming in, ” he said. “I’m kind of thankful that Mikey Mo and Samardzija collided because Samardzija saw blood a little bit I thought. Very thankful for Mikey Mo.”
One player who didn’t join the fray was Giants catcher Buster Posey, who stood and watched as Harper rushed the mound and then stayed to the edges of the fight.
While much was made on social media about Posey’s inaction, Strickland said there was no need for Posey to explain himself.
“I know Buster has our back, ” Strickland said. “We as a whole group and team, we stick together. That’s never a worry of mine.”
Harper had his own theory why Posey stayed out of the mix.
“I think a lot of their guys were shocked, ” Harper said. “Buster was definitely shocked and not looking for that to happen.”
There are still two games left in the series between the two teams in San Francisco — next up is Tuesday night at 10: 15 p.m. ET.
The Nationals enter Tuesday 31-19 and with an 8 1/2 game lead in the NL East, CBSSports.com reports. Harper is hitting.331/.443/.663 with 11 doubles, 15 homers and 41 RBI, so him missing any time definitely hurts.
Bryce Harper, 24, leads all of Major League Baseball in fan balloting for the 2017 MLB All-Star Game, according to the MLB. The 2015 National League Most Valuable Player is aiming for his fifth career All-Star selection and fourth fan-elected start.
The Giants are a disappointing 22-31. Strickland has a 1.53 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 18 strikeouts against nine walks in 17 2/3 inningsm according to CBSSports.com.

UH OH: Kathy Griffin Deep-Sixed Tweets Before Issuing Apology

0

Comedian and CNN New Year’s Eve host Kathy Griffin sent defensive tweets before she apologized. In short: she’s screwed.
The PR nightmare for Kathy Griffin just got worse.
Before the comedian came out with her video apology for posing for an artistic portrait with a fake, bloody, beheaded Donald Trump, she sent defensive messages into the Twittersphere. And she wasn’ t exactly filled with remorse.
Sure, she chucked them.
But like a crime scene, Twitter often has an afterlife.

Portland train stabbing suspect has courtroom outburst

Jeremy Christian appeared in court Tuesday on charges he killed two men and wounded another after he allegedly yelled hate speech at two young women
Stabbing suspect Jeremy Christian appears at an arraignment May 30,2017, in Portland, Ore.
PORTLAND, Ore. — A suspect made repeated verbal outbursts Tuesday as he appeared in court to face charges that he fatally stabbed two men and wounded another after yelling hate speech at two young women, one of whom was wearing a hijab, on a Portland light rail train Friday.
A defiant Jeremy Joseph Christian made his first appearance Tuesday afternoon before Judge Paul G. Crowley at the Multnomah Justice Center. As the 35-year-old entered the courtroom, he yelled about free speech before saying, “Death to the enemies of America. Leave this country if you hate our freedom.”
“You call it terrorism, I call it patriotism, ” Christian said. “You hear me? Die.”
Portland stabbing survivor Micah Fletcher was in court May 30 as his alleged attacker Jeremy Christian was arraigned.
The outbursts were followed by a commotion outside the courtroom.
Two men were killed in Portland, Oregon, while protecting a pair of teenagers from a racist tirade. Friday’s deadly attack happened aboard a ligh…
Micah David-Cole Fletcher, 21, suffered a slash wound to his neck and chest as he tried to confront Christian and help the young women. Two other men who also came to the aid of the young women — Ricky John Best, 53, and Taliesin Myrddin Namkai-Meche, 23 — were killed in the incident.
Police reports say Christian is seen on surveillance video yelling racial and anti-Muslims slurs at the two young women and attacking the men, who intervened, with a knife, CBS News’ Mireya Villarreal reports. Fletcher told investigators Christian “threatened to decapitate people.”
Police said they’ll examine what appears to be Christian’s extremist ideology, including social media posts indicating an affinity for Nazis and political violence.
Fletcher, recently released from the hospital, appeared in the courtroom during the brief hearing along with family of victims and supporters.
Christian is charged with two counts of aggravated murder, two counts of second-degree intimidation and one count of attempted aggravated murder, one count of first-degree assault and three counts of unlawful use of a weapon, reports CBS affiliate KOIN.
He has been appointed public defenders. Lane Borg, the head of the local public defender agency, said the office was “saddened by this tragedy” but urged people to let the justice system take its course.
Tuesday, Christian’s case was assigned to a judge and an attorney requested a speedy trial.
Deputies say they found bedding, water bottles, food and plastic bottles filled with urine after he attacked the woman in her Louisiana home May 3

US envoy: US believes China is trying to stop North Korea tests

0

U. S. Ambassador Nikki Haley said Tuesday the Trump administration believes China is using “back channel networking” with North Korea to try and get Kim Jong Un to stop nuclear and ballistic missile testing.
UNITED NATIONS— U. S. Ambassador Nikki Haley said Tuesday the Trump administration believes China is using “back channel networking” with North Korea to try and get Kim Jong Un to stop nuclear and ballistic missile testing.
“We believe they are being productive, ” she told reporters. “We do think they’ re trying to counter what is happening now.”
Haley said China knows North Korea best “and so we’ re going to keep the pressure on China, but we’ re going to continue to work with them in any way that they think is best.”
At the same time, Haley said, the United States and China are discussing the timing of a new Security Council resolution that would toughen sanctions against North Korea in response to its latest ballistic missile launches. The latest launch on Monday was the third in three weeks.
Beijing is North Korea’s traditional ally and accounts for up to 90 percent of the isolated nation’s external trade, giving it considerable economic leverage. But there are limits to China’s influence and its willingness to use it.
North Korea has advanced its nuclear weapons program over Chinese objections. Notwithstanding U. S. calls for China to turn the screw, Beijing remains reluctant to impose biting economic pressure as it fears a North Korean collapse that would lead to instability on China’s doorstep.
China’s U. N. ambassador, Liu Jieyi, made clear last week that Beijing’s top priority is to restart talks with North Korea following its multiple tests to try to reduce tensions rather than impose new sanctions. He stressed that all progress with Pyongyang on eliminating nuclear weapons from the Korean peninsula has come through dialogue.
Haley said Washington and Beijing are trying to decide the best way to approach North Korea.
“I don’ t think it’s backpedaling as much as nothing is changing North Korea’s actions, ” she said. “If this is going to happen every other day, how should we respond in a way that we actually stop these things, or slow it down?”
“I think we’ re having those conversations this week, and I hope that we can come up with a final solution, ” Haley added.
Earlier this month, she said Beijing was not engaging on a new resolution, but she told reporters Tuesday that she has heard from the Chinese and the discussions now are about “at what point do we do the resolution.”
The Security Council has imposed six rounds of increasingly tough sanctions on North Korea.
Pyongyang’s reaction has been defiance and stepped up testing to improve its nuclear arsenal and achieve its goal of being able to launch an intercontinental ballistic missile with a nuclear warhead capable of reaching the United States.
In a sign of growing U. S. anxiety over North Korea’s weapons development, the Pentagon said Tuesday it had shot down a mock warhead over the Pacific. It was the first test in three years of a U. S.-based missile defense system and the first ever targeting an intercontinental-range missile like North Korea is developing.
North Korea’s deputy U. N. ambassador, Kim In Ryong, told U. N. correspondents on May 19 that his government will rapidly strengthen its nuclear strike capability as long as the United States maintains its “hostile policy” toward the country.
He said that if the Trump administration wants peace on the Korean peninsula it should replace the armistice agreement that ended the 1950-53 Korean War with a peace accord and halt its anti-North Korea policy, which he called “the root cause of all problems.”
The Trump administration has said there should be no talks until North Korea takes steps toward getting rid of its nuclear arsenal.

LocalBitcoins traders jailed over money transmission business and narcotics

0

A father and son in the US have been sentenced to 46 and 106 months in jail respectively for operating an unlicensed money transmission business through the popular bitcoin exchange, LocalBitcoins.
A father and son who used the bitcoin exchange platform LocalBitcoins have both been sentenced to jail for running an unlicensed money transmission business. Randall Lord and his son Michael Lord were sentenced to 46 months and 106 months, respectively, for their activity.
The son was given a harsher sentence because he also plead guilty to a narcotics distribution conspiracy charge – he’d agreed to distribute controlled dangerous substances including alprazolam, a Schedule IV controlled substance – as well as running an unlawful money business while his father only plead guilty to the latter charge. The two plead their guilt in April last year.
Some of the specific errors the two made included not filing a receipt for $31,000 in US currency, and not registering their business with FinCEN.
Jerome McDuffie, from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) , said:
Michael Lord had a LocalBitcoins.com account under the username ‘Internet151’ that he operated since 2012. His profile lists over 3,000 confirmed trades; the court said it believes the pair used multiple personal and business accounts to hide the purchases. Law enforcement has come down heavily on a few traders from the LocalBitcoins platform. In the past month, two users from the site plead guilty to similar charges.
The case of Michael Lord, who was sentenced on an additional narcotics charge, upholds the common stereotype that the dark web, and its most popular cryptocurrency, bitcoin, are strongly tied to the drug trade. The most popular seizure of bitcoin drug money was when the FBI sprung on the Silk Road and its supposed maintainer Ross Ulbricht who is currently serving a jail term.

Uber sacks VP responsible for self-driving car project

0

Uber has sacked the VP at the centre of a court case it’s fighting with Alphabet which owns the self-driving car firm, Waymo. The firing shows that Uber does believe its employee stole trade secrets.
Earlier this year, Alphabet filed a lawsuit against the controversial company, Uber, for stealing trade secrets. In a new development, Anthony Levandowski, the vice president responsible for Uber’s self-driving car project, has been given his walking papers by Uber after refusing to follow court orders to hand over documents related to the technology that Alphabet says he took from them.
Levandowski used to work at Waymo, which Alphabet owns. When Levandowski left for Uber, he allegedly stole trade secrets and 14,000 documents which he then brought to Uber.
A termination letter filed to the court by Uber explains the three major violations that led to Levandowski’s termination: Uber told him to fully comply with court orders; Levandowski didn’t comply with directives issued by Uber in conducting its internal investigation; and the employment agreement requires that employees “have returned or destroyed all property and confidential information belonging to any prior employer.”
With the firing of Levandowski, it seems as though Uber may be found guilty by the court and will likely face a financial penalty. Levandowski’s replacement at Uber, Eric Meyhofer, will stay on in the position he filled.

Trump lashes out at Germany over 'very bad for US' policies

0

US President Donald Trump called Germany’s trade and spending policies
US President Donald Trump called Germany’s trade and spending policies “very bad” yesterday, intensifying a row between the long-time allies and immediately earning himself the moniker “destroyer of Western values” from a leading German politician.
As the war of words threatened to spin out of control, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and other senior German politicians stressed the importance of their country’s Atlantic ties, with Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel suggesting the spat was just a rough patch.
Mr Trump took to Twitter to attack Germany, a day after Ms Merkel ramped up her doubts about the reliability of Washington as an ally.
“We have a massive trade deficit with Germany, plus they pay far less than they should on Nato & military. Very bad for US. This will change, ” Mr Trump tweeted.
The tit-for-tat dispute escalated rapidly after Mr Trump criticised major Nato allies over their military spending and refused to endorse a global climate change accord. Later, White House spokesman Sean Spicer clarified that the US President views Germany as an important ally and gets along very well with Ms Merkel.
Speaking at a news briefing after Mr Trump’s tweet, Mr Spicer said: “They get along very well. He has a lot of respect for Ms Merkel. And he views not just Germany but the rest of Europe as an important American ally.”
On Sunday, Ms Merkel showed the gravity of her concern about Washington’s dependability under Mr Trump when she warned at an election campaign event in a packed Bavarian beer tent that the times when Europe could fully rely on others were “over to a certain extent”.
Those comments, which caused shock in Washington, vented Europe’s frustration with Mr Trump on climate policy in particular. And while German politicians sided with Ms Merkel, Mr Gabriel signalled that it was time for cooler heads to prevail.
“The United States are older and bigger than the current conflict, ” he said, adding that relations would improve. “It is inappropriate that we are now communicating with each other between a beer tent and Twitter, ” he said in Berlin.
Ms Merkel had already begun finessing her message on Monday, stressing that she was a “convinced trans-Atlanticist”.
But Martin Schulz, leader of Mr Gabriel’s centre-left Social Democrats, was less emollient earlier in the day when he told reporters Mr Trump was “the destroyer of all Western values”. He added that the US President was undermining the peaceful co-operation of nations based on mutual respect and tolerance.
Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni said he agreed with Ms Merkel that Europe needed to forge its own path.
“This takes nothing away from the importance of our trans-Atlantic ties and our alliance with the United States. But the importance we put on these ties cannot mean that we abandon fundamental principles, such as our commitment to fight climate change and in favour of open societies and free trade, ” he said.

Italien steuert auf Neuwahlen im Herbst zu

0
