Facebook Sorry For Banning Tiananmen Square Tribute Frame

0

Facebook apologized for “mistakenly” censoring content that paid tribute to the 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre, according to a Hong Kong Free Press report.
Facebook recently apologized for “mistakenly” censoring content that paid tribute to the 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre, according to a Tuesday report from the Hong Kong Free Press (HKFP) .
The social media platform offers users a picture frame to accompany their profile photos, often in support of a particular cause. Fung Ka-keung, the chief executive of Hong Kong Professional Teachers’ Union (HKFP) , submitted a customized frame commemorating the violent protests to Facebook on Friday for review.
Roughly 24 hours later, Fung said that the company rejected the design because it doesn’ t meet official policies.
Facebook originally claimed that the virtual frame “belittles, threatens, or attacks a particular person, legal entity, nationality or group, ” according to the HKFP. The social media company reversed its decision soon after, perhaps because the initial notification was an automated response.
“The frame was disapproved incorrectly. We apologize for this mistake and have let the user know we approved his submission, ” a Facebook representative told The Daily Caller News Foundation (TheDCNF) .
Fung wants further explanation for why the artwork was initially denied, citing his contention that he submitted a separate but similar frame a day later that was still pending early Tuesday.
Facebook is currently banned in mainland China, but allegedly not in areas like Taiwan and Hong Kong. The tech conglomerate has been trying to curry favor with the country to allow the platform, causing people to “suspect the decision might be political.” The Chinese government is very sensitive about any mentions or references of the large-scale demonstrations that reportedly ended up with hundreds of dead citizens, leading Fung to believe Facebook may have been kowtowing to China.
After the artistic feature was ultimately approved, Fung said that more than 1,000 people had updated their Facebook profile pictures with the now-approved frame. The frame can be seen on Fung’s own profile.

It has been a very long road to release since we started development on Everspace more than two years ago, and it’s hard to believe the day is finally upon us. Truly an exciting time for everyone here at Rockfish Games and for space game enthusiasts. The greatest addition coming with the full release is the long-awaited campaign, including missions, cinematic flashbacks, and fully-voiced cutscenes (in English and German) with text localization available for more than 10 languages including French, Chinese, and Spanish.
As all players who have played Everspace in Game Preview have already experienced, the hero finds himself clueless in the cockpit of a space fighter at the beginning of the game. After completing basic pilot training, the peculiar onboard AI provides sometimes useful contextual information about the game world and its lore. Now in the full version, you’ ll gradually unveil the mystery behind the hero’s existence and your mission through character encounters and cinematic memory flashbacks.
In the completely revamped final sector, you must survive an all-new boss fight that will provide the last piece of the campaign puzzle. But this will not be the end of the game. There’s still an important objective to accomplish to reach the final destination of your journey — no more spoilers beyond this point!

Two soccer coaches from a Chino Hills high school were among four people killed in a crash near the Desert Center area.
Two soccer coaches from a Chino Hills high school were among four people killed in a crash near the Desert Center area. Matt Hodges, 30, was the head coach of the varsity girls’ soccer team at Ayala High School, and Gabby Constante was the assistant coach of the team. Both coaches and two other people were killed Monday afternoon in a head-on collision between the car they were in, a 2012 Toyota Corolla, and a 1999 Freightliner big rig on Highway 177 about 20 miles north of Desert Center in Riverside County. According to preliminary information from the California Highway Patrol, the Corolla was traveling southbound on Highway 177 when Hodges, the driver, veered into the northbound lane and collided head-on with the big rig. The group was coming home from a Memorial Day trip to a lake in Parker, Arizona. Hodges was transported to Desert Regional Medical Center, where he later died. Constante and two unidentified women from Murrieta were pronounced dead at the scene. Two of the female victims were 20 years old and one was 21, according to the CHP. The big-rig driver was a 55-year-old Afton resident, according to CHP officials. Authorities said he did not appear to be injured in the wreck. The cause of the crash was under investigation. News of the coaches comes just one day before the high school’s graduation ceremony. The coaches were being honored during Tuesday’s graduation rehearsal.”I just came from practice and I’ve seen a lot of ups and downs with our soccer players, but there’s quite a few eyes that are keeping an extra eye on them today at practice, ” said Ayala High School Athletic Director Warren Reed. Hodges was the head coach for the school’s varsity team for at least four years, and Constante was the assistant coach for two years. Both were also coaches for a club team called “Legends.”A private vigil was expected to be held in the evening for any students who want to attend.

LOS ANGELES, May 30 (Reuters) – Apple Inc’s Apple Music streaming service will release its adaptation of comedian James Corden’s “Carpool Karaoke” to subscribers beginning on Aug. 8, the company said on its website on Tuesday. The technology giant had previously announced that “Carpool Karaoke: The Series” would be launched in April as part of a move into original video for Apple Music, a $9.99-a-month streaming service. Apple later delayed the release without providing an explanation.
The series for Apple Music is an adaptation of a popular segment that runs during CBS Corp’s “The Late Show with James Corden” and sees him driving with a celebrity and singing a medley of songs.
Corden will appear in the Apple Music series with basketball superstar LeBron James and actor Will Smith, according to Apple’s statement. Other episodes feature celebrity pairings including John Legend with Alicia Keyes and Taraji P. Henson, and Miley Cyrus with her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, and other family members.
New episodes of the series will be released on Apple Music on Tuesdays, the company said. “Carpool Karaoke” will continue to be a recurring segment on “The Late Show.” (Reporting by Lisa Richwine; editing by Lisa Shumaker and Jonathan Oatis)

Singing great Olivia Newton-John revealed Tuesday a return of breast cancer, 25 years after her first successful battle made her an advocate for fighting the disease.
The British-born star said she was obliged to postpone a tour of the United States and Canada following her new diagnosis.
The 68-year-old said she will undergo a short course of radiation, as well as natural therapies, upon the advice of specialists at a cancer research center named after her in her adopted home of Melbourne, Australia.
The singer “is confident she will be back later in the year, better than ever, to celebrate her shows, ” said a statement by her management.
Newton-John has been a chart-topper since the 1970s with songs that stretch into pop, folk and country but she became best-known for starring in the 1978 musical comedy “Grease” alongside John Travolta.
Newton-John was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992, forcing her to halt her schedule.
The experience had a major impact on Newton-John who became an advocate for research into cancer and for early detection.
She has dedicated a series of albums and concerts to cancer and other charities and raised funds to build the health center in Melbourne.
Newton-John had earlier postponed the first half of a North American tour complaining of back pain.
After consulting doctors, she learned that the pain was connected with breast cancer which had spread to the sacrum bone of her back.

Uber fires Otto co-founder Anthony Levandowski due to Waymo dispute

Uber has terminated the employment of Anthony Levandowski, the co-founder of self-driving trucking company Otto and Uber’s former self-driving project engineering lead. The New York Times reported first on Levandowski’s firing, which was made official to employees via an internal staff email circulated on Tuesday.
Levandowski is at the heart of an ongoing legal battle between Uber and Waymo, the Alphabet company that resulted from Google’s self-driving car project. Waymo accused Levandowski of hatching a plan to use trade secrets related to Waymo’s in-house development of unique LiDAR tech to kickstart Otto’s and subsequently Uber’s own self-driving technology program.
During the court proceedings, Levandowski exercised his Fifth Amendment rights to avoid providing testimony or handing over evidence regarding his use of proprietary data from his time at Google. Uber had previously warned that Levandowski could face consequences for his lack of compliance with his employment requirements at the company.
Uber confirmed via a spokesperson that Levandowski was terminated following months of the company attempting to have him comply with and assist its own internal investigation into the matter, and had set a clear deadline for him to do so. Uber also noted that Eric Meyhofer, who stepped in when Levandowski was removed from his role leading ATG in April, will continue to lead the team and take over Levandowski’s direct reports.

Godzilla never seems to care about Tokyo being crushed beneath him

0

As the days and years dribble away, our two leaders, like Godzilla and Rodan, grapple and roar and roll around, smashing the model Tokyo to flinders.
That’s easy. Washed over the waterfall of wasted opportunity. With the entire state of Illinois soon to follow, battered on rocks, then breaking apart as it plunges into the frothing financial abyss.
Unless . .
Well, unless nothing. This isn’ t going to be fixed. Not now. Not next month. Maybe not next year. Maybe not ever. We’ re at the light incense and pray for Superman stage of the problem.
It is disingenuous for the Sun-Times, my beloved mother ship, to post a daily front page count of how long it has been since Illinois has had a budget. The idea is that doing so will somehow shame our leaders into coming to an agreement and getting on with the business of trying to right the capsized and foundering vessel that is Illinois.
But really, if embarrassment were a possibility with the speaker of the house and the governor, this would have resolved itself long ago. I’ ve met crackheads living in a nest of blankets on Lower Wacker Drive who had a more highly developed sense of shame than these two jokers.
I do not want to fall into the easy “a plague on both their houses” trap. Yes, they are equally unpleasant men.
Bruce Rauner is a callous, sneering billionaire who comes across in person like the human model of C. Montgomery Burns on “The Simpsons.” Rauner expressed no interest whatsoever in public life beyond enriching himself until, perhaps bored, he took some of his bottomless lake of money and began fire hosing it at Illinois — a kind of political waterboarding. Eventually the state, sputtering and gasping, cried uncle, and elected him governor over Pat Quinn. Good old Pat, standing at the mound in his zigzag T-shirt, lowered his head as if weighed down by the brim of his enormous baseball cap, uttered a sigh and padded home.
And Mike Madigan is a grim slip of a man: think of a last year’s jack-o’ -lantern mounted on a broomstick, the whole thing marinated in vinegar then hung out to dry.
Rauner is definitely in the wrong. He’s kneecapped the budget, tying it to a variety of side issues — castrating the unions, demanding term limits so that no future Madigans can spawn. With typical my-way-or-the-highway Republican scorn, he demands capitulation then denounces his opponents for holding as fast to their convictions as he does to his own. Even as unions founder, corporate profits soar, and non-CEO salaries — surprise, surprise — stagnate, Rauner insists that the union bogeyman must be defeated before someone tosses a life ring to Illinois.
If rich old white men like Madigan and Rauner were being hurt by this impasse, it would have been resolved yesterday. But it damages the poor, the struggling young — who rely on public universities and colleges that are dropping staff, injecting furlough days into their academic calendars, and, in general, suffering on starvation rations. Plus those with disabilities, victims of crime, and all the unfortunates who must fall back onto a safety net that both men are pawning to the rope merchant.
Godzilla never seems to mind the buildings being crushed beneath him, does he? Mothra doesn’ t flinch before pulling down the sparking power lines. You never see the guys in the rubber suits pause, thinking, “Gosh, I hope those people on that bus are OK. . .” They’ re monsters. They don’ t care. That’s he definition of being a monster. Not caring.
If either Madigan or Rauner care about the state being ground to kindling under them, there is scant evidence. The people of Illinois, we care big time. We can’ t afford not to. But nobody hears our voices over the din; they must be muffled by those thick rubber suits.

Amazon hits $1,000. What will keep it from $2,000?

0

Momentum doesn’t last forever, and Amazon is losing first-mover advantage on two fronts: e-commerce and cloud.
SAN FRANCISCO — Shares of Amazon topped $1,000 Tuesday, a milestone that reflects its meteoric rise. So, next stop $2,000?
Analysts on Wall Street are overwhelmingly bullish — only one brokerage has a hold and none have “sells”, according to Bloomberg terminal data, and some of the most optimistic see shares hitting $1,250 in the next 12 months. Few want to miss out on one of the Internet’s biggest stock runs. Amazon shares are up 38% from a year ago and 14 times more valuable than they were a decade ago.
Yet momentum doesn’t last forever, an investing reality Apple shareholders finally faced two years ago.
The biggest threat to Amazon (AMZN) is the competition coming up in its rearview mirror, say analysts. In part because of CEO Jeff Bezos’ willingness to continually reinvest in research and new areas, the Seattle-based company has long had a massive first mover advantage in both retail and web services. That is now changing.
Related stories
“Amazon is still the leader but the competitive environment is intensifying, ” said Ed Yruma, managing director at KeyBanc Capital Markets.
Effectively, Amazon is two companies, one a retail e-commerce company that’s building out a global marketplace and the other a cloud storage and services company that accounted for the biggest share of the company’s consolidated operating income in the first quarter of 2017, outflanking retail profits.
On the retail side, arch-rival Walmart is the main potential roadblock to Amazon’s continued growth. Determined to move into e-commerce and with the advantage of a massive brick and mortar store base, Walmart is increasingly dynamic, Yruma said.
Wal-mart has focused its efforts more on middle-income consumers. Amazon, in contrast, has made more inroads with upper- and upper-middle income consumers, said Yruma.
“You’ re going to see more of the middle-income consumer moving to e-commerce — and they don’ t have any loyalty to Amazon, ” said Yruma.
With Walmart’s enormous logistics and distribution network, and its acquisition of the e-commerce company Jet.com last year, “they could very well begin to take away some of Amazon’s business, ” said Scott Rothbort, a professor at Stillman School of Business at Seton Hall University.
The upside for Amazon is that there’s still a lot of market to move into. Edward Jones estimates that while current U. S. spending online is about 15% of the retail market, it could rise to as much as 30% in the long run.
“So there’s a lot of runway there, ” said Edward Jones Amazon analyst Josh Olson.
While consumers think of Amazon as an e-commerce giant, in terms of profit its cloud computing business, AWS, is actually stronger. Amazon remains the clear leader in cloud computing, well ahead of both Microsoft and Google.
“Their web service business is their real growth area, that has much fatter margins and is something I think they’ re going to be able to expand more rapidly, ” said Seton Hall’s Rothbort.
A driver of Amazon’s success has been its strong focus on both the consumer and investment in new technologies that keep it well ahead of the pack.
“That’s the primary risk right now, that they overinvest, at least in the short term, and that puts pressure on profits, ” said Olson.
Bezos got a pass from investors for years on profits, seemingly impervious to Wall Street’s hunger for continual quarterly returns. With increasing profits over the past few quarters, there is some concern that the market might not be as forgiving should those returns fail to continue.
However Olson thinks that there’s substantial confidence that Amazon will continue to be prudent.
“Bezos has proven he’s focused on the long term, on shareholder return and the consumer. He understands both sides of the equation, ” he said.

All-in-Ones (AIOs) have taken an exciting turn this week at Computex with the introduction of the Dell Inspiron 27 7000. Aside from being one of the first AIOs to feature AMD’s new Ryzen processor, the attractive PC is noteworthy in that it can be easily upgraded down the road – a rare (although not entirely unheard-of) trait among such systems.
The entry-level configuration includes a quad-core Ryzen 5 1400 CPU and Radeon RX 560 graphics for around $1,000. For a bit more coin (roughly $1,300) , you can bump up to an octa-core Ryzen 7 1700 processor and a Radeon RX 580 GPU with 8GB of video memory. Both configurations include a full-HD IPS display.
Dell’s top-end configuration, yours for around $1,500, swaps out the 1080p display for a 4K HDR panel. While this may sound nice in theory, I’ ve found that 27 inches is simply too small to run 4K natively (I’ d recommend a minimum of 32 inches for native 4K) . What’s more, that RX 580 is going to struggle to run at 4K with the eye candy enabled.
Regardless of what configuration you spring for now, you’ ll be able to upgrade the system at a later date with a new processor and additional / faster storage and RAM. The graphics card, however, doesn’ t appear to be upgradable.
The new Dell Inspiron 27 7000 is available from today via Dell’s website and at select retailers worldwide.
