Pro Bowl: Star showcase still not much of a showdown

0

NewsHubORLANDO, Fla. — Like most of the players at the Pro Bowl, Bills guard Richie Incognito hears the criticism.
The game lacks intensity. There’s not enough drama. It’s not real NFL football.
But Incognito is like the vast majority of the 88 players invited to this all-star gathering Sunday night. He sees the Pro Bowl more as a celebration of achievement and as a way to thank the fans.
He wouldn’t change a thing.
“In my mind, it’s as good as it should be,” Incognito said. “You really can’t ask guys to come out here and fly around at full speed when we’ve been off for the last two or three weeks. And some guys are just coming down here after conference championship games. Maybe make it more fan interactive, get the fans involved more, do more of the skills competition.”
The NFL has seemed open to ways to energize its end-of-the-year showcase that is now sandwiched between conference championship and Super Bowl weeks. A few years ago, the league broke from the traditional AFC-NFC matchup and allowed celebrity coaches to draft two teams.
Now, in hopes of giving the game a lift, the NFL has moved the Pro Bowl from Hawaii to Orlando, where it has become more of a weeklong event, complete with a reimagined Skills Showdown. The AFC-NFC matchup has also returned after three years of nonconference games.
Still, it remains to be seen if the NFL can continue selling a game that bears little resemblance to the product it puts on the field during the season. The players come to the Pro Bowl to have fun — not get hurt — and maybe win.
“This Pro Bowl is special because you’re coming here to celebrate what you’ve accomplished,” Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. said. “It’s a lot of fun.”
Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman says the intensity would rise and more invited players would show up if the NFL gave them their weekly game salaries. Under the collective-bargaining agreement, each player from the winning team will make $61,000 this week and the losing players will take home $30,000.
“You pay them what you are paying them, and you get this performance,” Sherman said. “It’s a different element. . .. I guarantee you less guys would miss the Pro Bowl if you told them you’re going to pay them their normal salary for one more game.”
Former NFL player and coach Herm Edwards says the game as played now is fine. He says the Pro Bowl is not about the game, it’s about the fans and the players giving back.
Thousands of fans have been out at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports complex this week watching the AFC and NFC practice.
After the practices, most of the players signed autographs and took pictures in the laid-back atmosphere. All of the practices are short and glorified walk-throughs, and the players are mostly having fun with each other and the fans.

References to Windows 10 Cloud appear in build 15019

0

NewsHubEarlier this week, it was discovered that Microsoft is working on a ‘Cloud Shell’ , which is meant to be a “lightweight Windows version for the modern computing world”. Now, references to the Windows 10 Cloud SKU have appeared in the latest Windows 10 Insider Preview build, 15019.
First noticed by Petri , the reference is found in the Pkeyconfig.xrm-ms, which can be read by using a third-party app called Product Key Configuration Reader.
You’ll notice from the image that there are three versions: Cloud OEM, Cloud Retail, and CloudN. Note that ‘N’ versions of Windows are nothing new; those are the ones that ship without certain bundled services in the European Union ad South Korea. But a retail version of the SKU seems to imply that not only would this Windows 10 Cloud be available on purchased PCs, but you’d be able to buy it as well.
Of course, nothing is written in stone until Microsoft officially announces it, and sometimes, even after that. Windows 10 Cloud may never show up in the real world; keep in mind that at one point, there were references to Windows 10 RT as well.

Pitt, CMU react to Trump's executive order on immigration

0

NewsHubOfficials from the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University have released statements in reaction to President Donald Trump’s executive order barring immigrants from seven countries from entering the United States.
The order was already in effect Saturday as people coming into the U. S. from Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Yemen, Libya and Somalia were being detained at airports throughout the country.
“[Friday], the president signed an executive order on immigration that has the potential to significantly impact our university community,” Pitt Chancellor Patrick Gallagher said.
“The University of Pittsburgh has always viewed education and research as a global enterprise — one that is a vital part of our mission. Because of this, our vibrant community includes students, faculty, visiting scholars, family members and staff with ties to the countries covered by Friday’s executive order.”
Mr. Gallagher’s statement went on to urge anyone affiliated with Pitt from the affected countries who plan to travel outside the United States to contact the university’s Office of international Services.
CMU’s Farnam Jahanian, provost and chief academic officer, and Gina Caselegno, dean of students, shared similar sentiments with their university’s community.
“This is also an important time for all of us to recall that Carnegie Mellon University is a global community committed to diversity and inclusion,” they said. “This is a foundational value, necessary to fulfilling our mission of education, research and creativity that benefits the world. Even as we encounter changing conditions around us, we will continue to be guided by that value.”

18. Spieltag: Borussia Mönchengladbach dreht verrücktes Spiel bei Bayer Leverkusen

0

Microsoft has finally removed its listing for the Surface 3 from its online Store

0

NewsHubWe’ve known for some time that Microsoft was planning to end production of the Surface 3 by the end of last year. By November 1, the device was out of stock in the US, UK, France, and more. Today though, almost three months later, the company has finally removed the tablet’s listing in the US Microsoft Store.
During Microsoft’s earnings call this week , the firm repeatedly said that it was phasing out the Surface 3 in favor of the Book and Pro 4. Naturally, this might imply the lack of a Surface 4; however, some have speculated that Microsoft’s announcement to run full Windows 10 on ARM processors would make room for such a device.
The Surface 3 does stand out from the rest of the non-Pro line of Surfaces. Its two predecessors, Surface RT and 2, did use ARM processors and ran Microsoft’s failed Windows RT and RT 8.1 operating systems, respectively. The Surface 3, now almost two years old, used an Intel Atom processor, making it able to run “full” Windows.
If you head over to the US Microsoft Store’s listing for the device , you’ll now be redirected to the Store’s homepage. The UK Store, however, still has a listing for students , but as you might expect, it’s out of stock.

Trump, Putin discuss trade sanctions, security issues ‹ Japan Today

0

NewsHubWASHINGTON —
Will President Donald Trump usher in a new era for U. S.-Russian relations, or are the two powers going to continue down the path as geopolitical foes?
Now that Russian President Vladimir Putin has held his first conversation with America’s newly inaugurated leader, attention turns to the fate of U. S. sanctions against Moscow and whether the two will look to enhance military cooperation against the Islamic State group.
Trump was noncommittal about whether he was considering lifting the economic sanctions ahead of the call, telling reporters Friday, “We’ll see what happens. As far as the sanctions, very early to be talking about that.”
While the White House has yet to comment on Saturday’s phone call, the Kremlin released a statement hinting that the two men discussed the sanctions, implemented by the Obama administration as a consequence of Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
The two leaders emphasized the importance of “restoring mutually beneficial trade and economic ties between business circles of the two countries, which could additionally stimulate the incremental and sustainable development of the bilateral relationship,” the Kremlin said.
Putin and Trump will also maintain “regular personal contact” and will begin preparations for a face-to-face meeting.
The Kremlin has applauded Trump’s promises to rebuild U. S.-Russian relations, which have been pushed to their worst level since the Cold War by the Ukraine crisis, war in Syria and allegations of Russian meddling in U. S. elections.
The Kremlin said that Putin and Trump spoke in particular about international issues, including the fight against terrorism, the Arab-Israeli conflict, Iran’s nuclear program, the situation on the Korean peninsula and the Ukraine crisis.
“The presidents spoke out in favor of the establishment of real coordination of Russian and American actions with the aim of destroying the Islamic State,” according to the statement.
In 2014, Russia annexed Ukraine’s Crimea region and backed separatists fighting government forces in eastern Ukraine, drawing widespread condemnation in Europe and the United States.
In response, sanctions were implemented against sectors of Russia’s economy, including financial services, energy, mining and defense. The Obama administration also sanctioned people in Putin’s inner circle.
Shortly before leaving office, President Barack Obama also ordered sanctions on Russian spy agencies, closed two Russian compounds in the United States and expelled 35 diplomats that he said were really spies. These sanctions followed an assessment by U. S. intelligence that Moscow meddled in the 2016 election to help Trump become president.
Trump’s tempered approach to U. S.-Russia relations has already raised concern among several European allies who believe keeping Russia in check is essential to regional security.
British Prime Minister Theresa May, whose country — as part of the European Union — also has punished Russia for its provocations in Ukraine, voiced the view of many in Europe, telling reporters in Washington on Friday: “We believe the sanctions should continue.”
Vice President Mike Pence and other senior advisers joined Trump for the call with Putin, including his national security adviser, retired Gen. Michael Flynn, chief of staff Reince Priebus and senior strategist Steve Bannon. Trump also spoke on Saturday with the leaders of Japan, Germany, France and Australia.
Two Republican senators — Arizona’s John McCain, chairman of the Armed Services Committee, and Ohio’s Rob Portman, a member of the Foreign Relations Committee —warned the White House about easing any punishments on Moscow and they pledged to turn the sanctions into law.
“I hope President Trump will put an end to this speculation and reject such a reckless course,” McCain said in a statement. “If he does not, I will work with my colleagues to codify sanctions against Russia into law.”
Portman said lifting the sanctions “for any reason other than a change in the behavior that led to those sanctions in the first place would send a dangerous message to a world already questioning the value of American leadership and the credibility of our commitments after eight years of Obama administration policies.”
McCain has emerged as a frequent critic of Trump among Capitol Hill Republicans. He takes a dim view of trying to reset relations with Moscow and says Trump should remember that Putin is “a murderer and a thug who seeks to undermine American national security interests at every turn.”
“For our commander in chief to think otherwise would be naive and dangerous,” McCain said.
McCain and Portman are part of a bipartisan group of senators who have introduced legislation designed to go beyond the punishments against Russia already levied by Obama and to demonstrate to Trump that forcefully responding to Moscow’s meddling isn’t a partisan issue.
The bill would impose mandatory visa bans and freeze the financial assets of anyone who carries out cyberattacks against public or private computer systems and democratic institutions.
The legislation also mandates sanctions in Russia’s all-important energy sector and on investments in the development of civil nuclear projects to rebuke Moscow for its provocations in eastern Ukraine and military support for Syrian President Bashar Assad.
