The dancers roll faster than the presses in high-spirited 'Newsies'

Marriott Theatre’s in-the-round production of the wonderfully rambunctious Disney musical is aided by the physical brilliance of an exemplary cast.
Journalistic upheaval. Corporate greed. Labor unionizing. Street protests. Juvenile detention abuses. Political favors.
No, this is not a list of hot topics pulled from recent newspaper headlines. Rather, it is a catalog of the forces at work in “Newsies,” the wonderfully rambunctious, endearing, dance-driven Disney musical that is set on the streets of New York City in 1899 as publishing magnates Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst were confronted by a determined band of teenage newsboys — most of them orphans scraping by on next to nothing — who simply would not settle for being squeezed into greater poverty, and staged what became known as the Newsboys Strike.

I confess to being a total sucker for this show which so blithely combines my love of journalism, dance and New York. But it possesses a magic that goes well beyond such personal matters. The pure magic of “Newsies” — with its exuberant score by composer Alan Menken and lyricist Jack Feldman, and its playfully fervent book by Harvey Fierstein — is that it tells this story with great heart and a spirit of can-do optimism even as it delves into serious issues.
For its in-the-round staging at Marriott Theatre, the ever-ingenious director-choreographer Alex Sanchez and master designer Kevin Depinet have devised countless ways to dance around the shift from the show’s iconic Broadway proscenium-style set (giant steel towers at once perilous and thrilling). Using everything from steel beam benches and heavy wooden tables as the platforms for thrilling, high-flying acrobatic movement, they pull off a neat trick, aided and abetted at every turn by the physical brilliance and aerobic panache of an exemplary cast.
The story: When Pulitzer and Hearst decide to improve their profits by raising the cost of papers sold to the newsboys who hawk them — a hike that could be disastrous to their already bare-bones existence — Jack Kelly (the handsome, graceful, clarion-voiced Patrick Rooney), a rambunctious 17-year-old who also happens to be a gifted artist with dreams of escaping the urban rat race, decides to rally his pals and take action against Pulitzer (Kevin Gudahl). After all, without the newsboys, “the papes” would not get sold at all.
If Kelly is the charismatic ringleader, it is the brainy Davey Jacobs (a winningly assertive Nick Graffagna), who becomes the philosopher behind the movement. He and his younger brother (played by Zachary Uzarraga, an impish boy who easily steals every scene with his perfect diction, knockout delivery, total focus and irrepressible confidence) are the rare newsboys who have parents, although they have become the wage-earners in their family since their father was injured in a work accident.
And then there is the ambitious young journalist Katherine Plumber (Eliza Palasz, who does a fine job with her big number, “Watch What Happens”). As a woman, she is condemned to the society pages, but she yearns for a more momentous beat. And while she and Jack strike up a tense, teasing relationship in their first encounter, Katherine (who has surprising connections that should not be revealed here) sees the potential for a front-page story in his strike plans. There also is an undeniable chemistry between the two.
When the initial strike action ends badly, and Jack’s disabled friend, Crutchie (sweetly played by Zachary’s older brother, Matthew Uzarraga), is badly beaten and confined to the dreadful Refuge, where street kids are warehoused and the city pays big bucks to its overseer, Jack is disheartened and ready to give up. But Katherine and Davey realize the strike must be turned into a larger struggle than one about the newsboys, with all the city’s workers galvanized to fight for their rights.
Serving as a champion and protector of Jack is Medda Larkin (a sophisticated turn by leggy Stephanie Pope), the vaudeville star and theater owner with impressive political connections. Her spicy chorus girls — played by Laura Savage and Adrienne Storrs — double as newsgirls. And just as the strike is a group action, this show is a vivid ensemble effort whose outstanding dancers (who also sing and act up a storm) earn bravos with every sensational number.
As always, there is first-rate musical direction by Ryan T. Nelson, with Patti Garwood conducting the small but mighty orchestra. All in all, this is a musical that, to borrow a song title, gives you “Something to Believe In.”

Lebanese crisis

The Lebanese Prime Minister resignation signals a new era of instability in the North.
Lebanese Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri’s resignation is an ominous sign that the relative stability Israel has enjoyed in the North might not last much longer. A number of factors have come together to bring Lebanon to the brink of a major political and economic crisis that could easily deteriorate into civil war and a military conflict with Israel.

Actor, singer and musician Rob Colletti says he stumbled into theater by accident.
CHICAGO (CBS) — Actor, singer and musician Rob Colletti says he stumbled into theater by accident.

“The end of my freshman year of high school, one of my friends was walking by my locker on his way to audition to this student-directed spring production, and he was nervous and asked me to go along. I said ‘fine’ and ended up getting a lead role,” he laughed. “I really got bit by the bug after that.”

Colletti grew up in Glen Ellyn, is a 2004 graduate of St. Francis Prep in Wheaton, a graduate of Columbia College and a Second City alum. Over the last 13 years, he’s been cast in Columbia’s production of “Grease” and landed a role of a lifetime in the Broadway hit “Book of Mormon.”
“I’ve been pretty lucky. I was in the original Chicago company. I was Ben Platt’s standby and then he and I went on tour. He then went to Broadway and I went on tour. Then they moved me to the Broadway company the following year,” he recalled. “At the time it was the biggest show in the world before Hamilton came out,” Colletti said.
Colletti stars as Dewey Finn — a role originated by Jack Black in the 2003 film “School of Rock” — where he dances, sings and performs with young musicians who play in a band of fifth graders.

“They are all, like, just phenomenal musicians. Some of them are better than some of the adults I’ve played with over the years,” he said. “Most of these kids have never acted before, they’ve never done anything in professional theater. Most of them have been playing music since they were really young, they never really had the experience. Nevertheless, they all had the guts to give it their all and they are all very talented.”
“School of Rock” is a rock musical with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Based on the 2003 film of the same name, the musical follows Finn, an out-of-work rock singer and guitarist, who pretends to be a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school.

“The kids have all this energy. It’s been magical. I knew it would be a lot of work adjusting to working with kids. The relationships are the incredible part. I love them. We’ve all become like family.”
Colletti says it’s great to be back performing before a hometown audience.
“I love Chicago. I’m biased obviously. I miss the culture and the people here. It’s just so great to be back and have the support.” he said.
“School of Rock: The Musical” is at the Cadillac Palace Theatre through Nov. 19th.

Quite a few people were upset upon discovering Twitter had blocked the search for the word “bisexual” in photos and news earlier today. However, Twitter says the removal of search results for certain terms were “an error.”
Removal of a term labeling one’s sexuality could be seen as a form of discrimination and purposely disallowing people to search for related items such as images and news articles about this term would be horrifying.
While we don’t yet know how this happened, some aren’t convinced this was an accident.
Twitter now tells TechCrunch “teams are working quickly to resolve” and that it will share more “as we have it.” We’ve checked and as of this writing it seems the problem persists.
It should also be noted that the removal only seems to affect the label of sexuality. However, other possibly offensive words (depending on how they are used, i.e. in a historical context) like “Hitler,” or “Nazi” were not removed, as tweeter Grady Brooch pointed out.
In other news, Twitter still has that pesky Russian bot problem for its engineering team to tackle as well, though we haven’t heard how that one will be resolved as of yet — or if it will anytime soon.

OpenStack’s next mission: bridging the gaps between open source projects

0

OpenStack, the massive open source project that provides large businesses with the software tools to run their data center infrastructure, is now almost eight..
OpenStack, the massive open source project that provides large businesses with the software tools to run their data center infrastructure, is now almost eight years old. While it had its ups and downs, hundreds of enterprises now use it to run their private clouds and there are even over two dozen public clouds that use the project’s tools. Users now include the likes of AT&T, Walmart, eBay, China Railway, GE Healthcare, SAP, Tencent and the Insurance Australia Group, to name just a few.
“One of the things that’s been happening is that we’re seven years in and the need for turning every type of infrastructure into programmable infrastructure has been proven out. “It’s no longer a debate,” OpenStack COO Mark Collier told me ahead of the projects semi-annual developer conference this week. OpenStack’s own surveys show that the project’s early adopters, who previously only tested it for their clouds, continue to move their production workflows to the platform, too. “We passed the hype phase,” Collier noted.
Indeed, in a recent survey of IT professionals, Linux and OpenStack service provider SUSE found that 23 percent of organizations now use the OpenStack in production. That’s up from 15 percent in 2015.
So with OpenStack now being the de facto standard for running private clouds and most of the core projects being stable, the community has recently tackled new use cases that range from container support to edge computing and running machine learning workflows on OpenStack Clouds. But to do all of this, users have to take the parts of OpenStack and mix and match them with other — typically also open source — projects. And that’s still very difficult because these companies then often have to figure out their own solutions for integrating all of these different tools. “We we find is that when we talk to users, they have figured it out,” said Collier. “But in the process — and it’s too hard — they had to write their own software to make it all work.”
So going forward, the OpenStack community and the Foundation behind it plan to focus quite a bit on exactly this problem. “We will redeploy our resources — and we spend $20 million a year — to how we can improve the integration and operational tools that make each open source project work better when you put them together,” said Collier. “That’s a pretty big evolution for us,” he added but noted that this is also a natural step for the project. The community, after all, already spent some efforts on testing some core integrations with tools like Docker or Kubernetes for container support. “The last mile of open source success is the gaps in between project,” said Collier.
“We, as a foundation, have to support all of the things that our community is doing,” added OpenStack Foundation Executive Director Jonathan Bryce. “That’s a broad open infrastructure mission and not just a subset of cloud virtualization technologies.”
In practice, this means new events that will focus on specific use cases, closer cooperation with other open source communities and more work on getting these different communities to work with each other. On the technical side, that also means going beyond proof of concepts and making sure that there are testing frameworks in place to ensure that different tools can work with each other.
Ideally, all of this will improve OpenStack, but I couldn’t help but think that Collier and Bryce were also thinking about the wider open source ecosystem and how projects like this can help others as well. “All of these open source projects — they operate in silos because they operate around distinct problems they are trying to solve,” said Collier. No doubt, there is a lot of truth to that. If the OpenStack community can help puncture some holes into these silos and get more projects to talk to each other, then that should be a win-win for everybody involved.
Both Collier and Bryce stressed that this doesn’t mean the project is taking its focus away from its core mission. There is still plenty of work happening in the core OpenStack projects like the Ironic service for running and managing bare-metal workloads (something that’s becoming increasingly important to businesses that want to run container and machine learning workloads on their OpenStack clouds), or the Nova compute service that sits at the core of the project, which can now more easily scale horizontally thanks to a complete overhaul of the scheduler that sits behind the service.

North Korea has warned US President Donald Trump to keep his mouth shut if he wants to avoid the destruction of his country.
North Korea has warned US President Donald Trump to keep his mouth shut if he wants to avoid the destruction of his country.
The ruling Korean Workers’ Party newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, carried a commentary on Sunday, the first day of Trump’s Asian tour. It said Trump will visit Seoul at a time when the US military is deploying its strategic arsenal in South Korea and the surrounding region. It criticized Trump for trying to control the North by force. It said no-one knows when or how “the rogue” will carry out reckless acts and that restraining Trump with physical power is the only way to prevent this. The commentary said North Korea will have no choice but to punish the United States by mobilizing all its power if the US misreads the North’s super-strong will and attacks the country. Trump has said that he plans to discuss putting more pressure on North Korea when he meets Asian leaders during his tour.
