New York – A law enforcement official says a car that plowed into a crowd of pedestrians in Times Square killed one person and injured about 20 others.
The official said that the driver was taken into custody after the Thursday lunchtime crash and is being tested for alcohol.
„Preliminarily it looks more like a vehicle accident than anything else, “ a New York police spokesperson said.
Police confirmed only that there were „multiple injuries“ and one death, adding that the vehicle was on fire. A maroon sedan vehicle lay partially upended on its side on the sidewalk with smoke and isolated flames spewing out of the hood, photographs on social media showed.
Times Square is typically packed with tourists and office workers. It lies in the heart of Midtown Manhattan and leads to Broadway, New York’s famed theatre district.
