Democratic Minnesota Senator Al Franken appeared on CNN’s „New Day“ Wednesday to discuss his new book, and the recent Kathy Griffin Trump photo controversy.
Democratic Minnesota Sen. Al Franken appeared on CNN’s “New Day” Wednesday to discuss his new book, and also addressed the controversy surrounding comedian Kathy Griffin.
Often known for shock comedy and loud humor, Griffin was heavily criticized Tuesday for her salacious photo of her holding a severed head made to look like President Donald Trump.
While interviewing Franken for his book, “New Day” host Alisyn Camerota asked Franken if Griffin went too far, or if the joke was fair game.
“Kathy is a friend and a terrific comedian, ” said Franken. “But this had no business being in our public discourse.”
He added that Griffin deserves to be forgiven because she was contrite and apologized up front. “She’s actually begged for forgiveness, ” Franken said. “And I believe in forgiveness.”
The recent fallout surrounding Griffin’s photo has caused some at CNN, including Jake Tapper, to denounce her behavior.
“I can’ t imagine how anybody would think that’s appropriate, ” Tapper said.
Anderson Cooper also got into the mix saying, “For the record, I am appalled by the photo shoot Kathy Griffin took part in.”
Griffin’s yearly gig as Cooper’s co-host for CNN’s “New Year’s Eve Live” has also been thrown into question now, as anchors comedians and fans have all deemed the stunt “not funny .”
