R ussia and China have expressed concern over North Korea carrying out a missile test, its latest act likely to escalate tensions in the region.
The launch early on Sunday morning follows weeks of sabre rattling between Pyongyang and Washington over the North’s nuclear ambitions.
North Korea said on Monday the mid-to-long range missile test was aimed at verifying the capability to carry a „large scale heavy nuclear warhead.“
The missile was launched at the highest angle so as not to affect the security of neighbouring countries and flew 787 kilometres (490 miles) reaching an altitude of 2,111km (1,312 miles) , the North’s official KCNA news agency reported.
The United Nations Security Council is due to meet on Tuesday to discuss the latest missile launch.
I t first imposed sanctions on North Korea in 2006 and has strengthened the measures in response to its five nuclear tests and two long-range rocket launches.
