EA has officially announced FIFA 18 for consoles and the PC. However, it does note that the Nintendo Switch version won’t be powered by the Frostbite engine, and will not feature a major game mode.
Around the same time last year, EA Sports announced FIFA 17, a revamped title powered by its new Frostbite engine. This is the same game engine that was recently utilized in Battlefield 1, Mass Effect: Andromeda, and Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst. FIFA 17 also offered a single player mode called „The Journey“, which allowed gamers to control Premier League’s next rising star, Alex Hunter.
Now, EA has unveiled FIFA 18 in a new trailer with cinematic footage created using the same Frostbite engine that will be utilized in gameplay.
As one can gather from the reveal trailer above, Portuguese football star Cristiano Ronaldo, who plays for the Spanish club Real Madrid, will be featured as the cover athlete for FIFA 18. Last year’s version featured Marco Reus. The trailer focuses mainly on Ronaldo and doesn’t show off any actual in-game footage.
But what’s more interesting to note is the fine print towards the end of the video. Although it confirms that the game will be utilizing the Frostbite engine once again and will feature a second season of „The Journey“, it states that both these advancements will only be available on the PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. This implies that gamers playing FIFA 18 on the Nintendo Switch, will not only be offered a toned down version of the title, but will also be missing out on a major single-player campaign mode. These improvements won’t be available on the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 versions of the game as well.
EA has also announced three separate versions of FIFA 18, namely Standard, Ronaldo, and Icon editions. The differences between the three can be noted below:
FIFA 18 is slated for a worldwide release on Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PC, and the Nintendo Switch, on September 29,2017. We’ll likely learn more about the title at E3 2017 later this week.
