TORONTO — Two men from Canada have been charged with alleged assaults at a protest in Washington, D. C. last month that saw Turkish government security officials viciously beat protesters.
Warrants have been issued for the arrests of Mahmut Sami Ellialti and Ahmet Cengizham Dereci, the Metropolitan Police Department said Thursday. Both face charges of assault causing significant bodily injury.
“Our understanding is those two individuals have Canadian addresses, but we’ re unable to confirm if they’ re in fact citizens, ” a police spokesperson said. They are among 18 charged over the May 16 incident.
Police said the suspects were identified from videos of the protest, in which opponents of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan were physically confronted by Turkish security officers who beat and kicked them.
