An incoming Grand Ledge High School freshman football player collapsed during a summer workout and died, according to a report from MLive media partner, WLNS.com .
Everson Guild was participating in weight training Monday morning when he collapsed. He lost consciousness, and coaches began CPR and used a defibrillator until emergency crews arrived, the report said.
Guild was taken to Sparrow Hospital where he died.
“Words cannot begin to express our sorrow over the loss of this young man, ” Superintendent Dr. Brian Metcalf said in a statement. “Our hearts go out to his family, his friends and his teammates and we will do everything within our power to ease their grief.”
The first day of high school football practice is Monday, Aug. 7.
