Police chiefs from around the world condemned President Trump’s tough-talking speech Friday.
Police chiefs from around the world condemned President Trump’s tough-talking speech Friday in which he encouraged Long Island cops to rough up MS-13 gang suspects.
The International Association of Chiefs of Police issued a statement shortly after the President’s address saying law enforcement officers are “trained to treat all individuals, whether they are a complainant, suspect, or defendant, with dignity and respect.”
“This is the bedrock principle behind the concepts of procedural justice and police legitimacy, ” the statement said.
The association’s response was one of many from police brass and civil rights advocates who were outraged that Trump condoned unnecessary use of force.

The commander in chief spoke to police cadets at Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood, a Long Island town that has struggled in recent years with MS-13 gang activity and murders.
“When you see these thugs being thrown into the back of a paddy wagon — you just see them thrown in, rough — I said, ‘Please don’ t be too nice,’ ” Trump told the crowd.
“Like when you guys put somebody in the car and you’ re protecting their head … You can take your hand away, OK?”
The remarks drew applause from the cadets, but Suffolk County police officials were not happy with Trump’s instructions.

“The SCPD has strict rules & procedures relating to the handling of prisoners. Violations of those rules are treated extremely seriously, ” the department said in a statement Friday. “As a department, we do not and will not tolerate roughing up of prisoners.”
The International Association of Chiefs of Police said that managing the use of force is the biggest challenge facing law enforcement.
“For these reasons, law enforcement agencies develop policies and procedures, as well as conduct extensive training, to ensure that any use of force is carefully applied and objectively reasonable considering the situation confronted by the officers, ” the Virginia-based association said in its statement.
