Rockets extend star guard after highlight season that led to runner-up for NBA MVP.
James Harden and the Houston Rockets reached a deal on a four-year extension that pushes Harden’s salary to $228 million through the 2022-23 season, a person familiar with the deal told USA TODAY Sports.
The person requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly about the terms of the deal.
ESPN first reported details of the contract, which is most lucrative contract in the NBA.
As the deal is structured right now, Harden is expected to make $46.8 million in 2022-23.
Harden signed the deal, according to the Rockets.
„It’s my pleasure to announce we’ve reached agreement with James Harden on a long-term contract extension, ” Rockets owner Leslie Alexander said in a statement. “Since he arrived in Houston, James has exhibited the incredible work ethic, desire to win, and passion to be the best that has made him one of the most unique and talented superstars in the history of the game.“
„Additionally, the commitment he has shown to our organization, the City of Houston, and Rockets fans all over the world makes him a perfect leader in our pursuit of another championship. I’m very happy for James, his mother Monja, and their family on this exciting day.“
Harden, an All-NBA performer in 2016-17 and runner-up to Oklahoma City Thunder star Russell Westbrook for MVP, averaged 29.1 points, 11.2 assists and 8.1 rebounds and shot 44% from the field and 34.7% on three-pointers last season.
„Houston is home for me, “ Harden said in a statement. „Mr. Alexander has shown he is fully committed to winning, and my teammates and I are going to keep putting in the work to get better and compete for the title.“
