J. Jonah Jameson, one of the big Spider-Man characters, isn’t in Spider-Man: Homecoming. So where is he and the Daily Bugle in the MCU?
J. K. Simmons played J. Jonah Jameson in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man films.
What would the Spider-Man universe be like without the Daily Bugle and the cigar-chomping J. Jonah Jameson? The answer is in Spider-Man: Homecoming, which doesn’ t include either the newspaper or the iconic supporting character. Considering that Peter Parker is only 15 years old in the film, he might be a little too young to start working at the Bugle as a photographer.
J. Jonah Jameson has been a part of Spider-Man’s universe since Stan Lee and Steve Ditko’s Amazing Spider-Man #1 was published in March 1963. In that issue, Jameson decided that Spider-Man was a public menace, even after saving his son Jon from a rocket test disaster. From that point on, Jameson has been a thorn in Spider-Man’s side, always trying to uncover his secret identity and put him out of the superhero business. Unbeknownst to Jameson, the young Peter Parker who keeps taking these amazing photos of Spider-Man in action is actually the web-head himself!
In later years, Jameson became the Mayor of New York City in the Marvel Universe. Hr resigned though, and took back control of the Daily Bugle. He still doesn’ t like Spider-Man.
Jameson was famously played by J. K. Simmons in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. The character wasn’ t included in 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man, but his name is shown in 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man.
Simmons’ performance as Jameson was so memorable that fans have been holding out hope that he would get to play him again. In 2015, Cinemablend reported that Simmons told Howard Stern that it was a “possibility” and he’s “absolutely” love to play the character again. There’s been no word on the topic since then. However, in April 2017, SlashFilm reported that producer Eric Hauserman Carroll confirmed to the site that there is no Daily Bugle in Homecoming.
“We toyed with it for a while, but again, we didn’ t want to go down that road right away, and if we do a Daily Bugle, we want to do it in a way that feels contemporary, ” Carroll told SlashFilm. “Working in a newspaper while fighting crime and overachieving, it just felt like one of those things where like…maybe it’s in his future? Maybe it’s what he does in college or something like that. But for now, no.”
We’ ll have to wait awhile to learn if The Daily Bugle will eventually come to the MCU. The Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel doesn’ t open until July 5,2019.
