Check out our list of what’s new on HBO each month, and what’s going away. September highlights include David Simon’s The Deuce.
Fall is coming, which means it is time to dig out your flannel, prepare to go back to school, and enjoy a dash of pumpkin spice in everything. As the days get shorter and colder, you might find yourself spending more time inside, getting plenty of use out of that HBO subscription you renewed to watch Game of Thrones. September will bring a new, diverse crop of shows and movies to HBO. Here are the highlights.
On the series front, the most notable show is The Deuce, the latest project from David Simon, creator of The Wire. The series explores the rise of the porn industry in 1970s New York City, and focuses on twin mobsters Vincent and Frankie Martino (both James Franco) , as well as Candy (Maggie Gyllenhaal) , a prostitute trying to carve out a role for herself in the burgeoning industry.
As far as movies, the big pictures include La Land, an Oscar-winning musical from director Damien Chazelle (Whiplash) , starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone as aspiring artists who find love and loss in Los Angeles. September also brings Hidden Figures, a critically acclaimed biopic about the African-American women whose work in mathematics was crucial to the development of NASA’s space program in the 1960s. The film stars Taraji P. Henson and Octavia Spencer, among others.
Other noteworthy additions include Hellboy II: The Golden Army, Scent of a Woman, and video-game adaptation of Assassin’s Creed, a bad movie with a great performance from Michael Fassbender .
As always, each passing month means some titles pass from HBO, into the realms of memory and Blu-ray purchases. Before September ends, be sure to watch the timeless Coen Brothers comedy The Big Lebowski, and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, one of the greatest Westerns ever made.
