MARNE, MI — A 51-year-old man died in a fire that consumed his apartment early Monday morning.
David John Fisher was found dead on Monday, Aug. 7 after flames were extinguished at his residence, a unit in the apartment building at 14532 State St. in Marne.
Fisher’s neighbor reported the fire at 4: 35 a.m. after smelling smoke, according to Capt. Mark Bennett, with the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.
The first deputy who responded identified smoke and flames in the southwest area of the complex. The deputy attempted to enter the apartment in the complex, but could not because of flames and smoke, police said.
Four other apartments in the complex were evacuated and had minor damage, Bennett said. Fisher’s body was recovered from his apartment after the fire was extinguished.
Fisher had medical issues and was used oxygen, Bennett said. It is unknown if this contributed to incident.
An autopsy will be conducted by Tuesday, Aug. 6 at the latest, Bennett said.
