Tomorrow at an exclusive press event in London Nokia will announce new phones. Top of the list of expected devices is the Nokia 8, though the Nokia 2, Nokia 7 and Nokia 9 have all been tipped.
The event will take place in London at 7.30pm on Wednesday 16 August 2017. Check back here shortly after for full details.
Nokia has so far refused to comment on whether or not it will hold a live stream of its Nokia 8 announcement. It did hold a live stream for its MWC 2017 conference, but that does not mean it will do so again this time.
If there is a live stream you’ll be able to find it on Nokia’s YouTube page, and we will endeavour to embed it at the top of this article.
Although the phone is almost certainly going to be announced tomorrow, this does not mean it will be immediately available. After all, the Nokia 3,5 and 6 that were announced at MWC back in February have only just gone on sale. We’ll bring you full details when we know more.
Various leaked information hints at a price tag of around £500 for the Nokia 8, which would make sense if the Nokia 9 is expected to have the better specification – most flagships in the UK today have RRPs between £600 and £650.
Many of the rumoured specifications for the Nokia 8 and Nokia 9 are similar, but the Nokia 9 is thought to be larger and to feature a higher screen-to-body ratio. While the 5.3in Nokia 8 will likely feature a 16: 9 panel, the 5.7in Nokia 9 could see a 18: 9 virtually full-screen display. Both are said to be Quad-HD displays with protective Gorilla Glass 5.
The Nokia 9 may also feature an iris scanner, and extra helpings of memory and storage – at 6GB and 128GB respectively.
One of the highlights is expected to be a Carl Zeiss-branded dual-camera, with Zeiss reportedly „rekindling its commitment to set new imaging standards for Nokia customers“.
There could be three 13Mp premium cameras in total, with one at the front and two at the rear. A leaked camera interface image suggests one of these rear cameras may have a monochrome sensor.
The core hardware is thought to be in line with other flagship Android phones, with the Nokia 8 likely running a 10nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor (with integrated Adreno 540 GPU) , 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. It is possible that the Nokia 8 will get the Snapdragon 660 with the 835 reserved for the Nokia 9, but the latest information suggests otherwise.
The Nokia 8 will charge over USB-C, but it is not known whether or not it will also charge wirelessly. With the Snapdragon 835 inside it should support Quick Charge 4.0.
We had assumed that the Nokia 8 would be running Nougat with a timely update to Android O following its release. However, with rumours now suggesting Android O could be no more than a week away and a Nokia 8 popping up on Geekbench running the software, it’s possible the company has teamed up with Google to put the new OS on its devices first.
It’s anticipated that the Nokia 8 will look very much like the smartphones lower down the line – Nokia made a point of saying no matter the price point you’ll get a premium design when it announced its earlier handsets.
VentureBeat has published the following image. In line with the rumours, there is a dual-camera on the rear, and what looks to be a 16: 9 screen with a physical home button below the screen.
Four colour options are expected to include Blue, Steel, Gold/Blue and Gold/Copper, all of which should offer IP68 waterproofing protection.
