As if the Yankees didn’ t have enough mounting pitching injuries, Jordan Montgomery was struck in the right side of the head by a batted ball while signing autographs down the right-field line during batting practice before Saturday’s game against Boston.
The rookie lefty remains scheduled to start in place of injured CC Sabathia’s in Sunday night’s series finale against the Red Sox, a Yankees spokesman said soon after the start of Saturday’s game. Masahiro Tanaka also was placed on the disabled list earlier in the day with right shoulder inflammation.
“Jordan Montgomery was hit with a fly ball during today’s batting practice, ” team spokesman Jason Zillo said. “He was evaluated by our medical staff and he’s in uniform today. He also currently is scheduled to make his start tomorrow.”
According to Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, Montgomery remained in the Yankees dugout for a few minutes while holding a towel to his head, before going into the clubhouse to be checked out.
The YES Network’s Meredith Marakovits said the ball that struck Montgomery was hit by Boston’s Sandy Leon.
