The Treasury Department’s inspector general is eyeballing the flight taken by Secretary Steve Mnuchin and his designer-loving wife on a government jet to Fort Knox the day of the solar eclipse.
“We are reviewing the circumstances of the Secretary’s August 21 flight… to determine whether all applicable travel, ethics, and appropriation laws and policies were observed, ” counsel Rich Delmar said in a statement to The Washington Post .
“When our review is complete, we will advise the appropriate officials, in accordance with the Inspector General Act and established procedures, ” Delmar added.
Treasury brass said Mnuchin and his wife, Louise Linton, were on official government business when they toured Fort Knox before heading up to the roof to watch the eclipse along with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
“The Secretary of the Treasury at times needs to use a government aircraft to facilitate his travel schedule and to ensure uninterrupted access to secure communications, ” a Treasury Department spokesman said.
The White House signed off on the day trip and Mnuchin reimbursed the government for Linton’s expenses, the spokesman added.
Linton caused a social media firestorm after she posted a photo of her and the hubby disembarking on Instagram — a post that included hashtags for pricey fashion labels such as #hermesscarf, #tomford and #valentino.
Mnuchin’s much-younger wife then attacked an Oregon mom of three who had chided her for boasting about the taxpayer-funded frolic. She later apologized for the nasty response.
