Over the next three days, National Hurricane Center forecasters say Maria will likely intensify to a major Category 3 storm as it nears the Lesser Antilles and the Virgin Islands. It could weaken slightly, but then regain strength as it approaches Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.
At 500 PM AST (2100 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Maria was located near latitude 12.3 North, longitude 52.6 West. Maria is moving toward the west near 20 mph (31 km/h). A slower
west-northwest motion is expected during the next couple of
days. On the forecast track, Maria is expected to approach the
Leeward Islands on Monday.
The Michigan crew are part of a massive out-of-state relief effort recruited to turn the lights back on after Irma knocked out power for 6.7 million homes and businesses in Florida, a record. Power companies from 29 states — from Arkansas to California to Massachusetts — sent help. DTE sent 250 trucks to Florida. Among those crews, 120 linemen trecked more than 1,300 miles to Miami-Dade County to fix broken poles and downed wires, according to company spokesman David Lingholm

From Friday afternoon until Irma passed Monday afternoon, a WeatherStem camera mounted atop the Science Laboratory & Administration Building at the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science recorded the storm’s rising winds, capturing gusts that topped 103 mph and storm surge that eventually submerged the school’s dock.

A new tropical depression has begun forming in the far east Atlantic Ocean and it’s expected to become Tropical Storm Lee in the next 24 hours. The storm is currently sitting at about 435 miles south-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands.
