West Point has a new person at the helm of its police department.
The Commercial Dispatch reports the Board of Selectmen has voted unanimously to hire Clay County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Avery Cook for the post. The 54-year-old will succeed former chief Tim Brinkley, who served from 2011 until he retired in July.
Cook began his police career with West Point Police in 2000, serving as a shift supervisor and as assistant chief under Brinkley and former chief Bobby Lane. In 2013, he went to work with the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, where he serves as an investigator and commander of the patrol division.
Following Tuesday’s vote, Cook said it’s an honor to return to the department where he started his career.
Cook’s start date is still to be determined.
