The British soccer star was stopped by officers in his VW Beetle at around 2: 00 a.m. Friday morning, police said. Earlier that night Rooney had been spotted dancing on tables at a bar and singing Oasis with Burnley player Phil Bardsley, a source told Metro UK.
The Mirror, which broke the news of Rooney’s arrest Friday morning, reported he was later taken to a local police station where he was quizzed by officers. He spent the night locked up, according to Metro UK.
Rooney has been released on bail and is due to appear at Stockport Magistrates‘ Court on Sept. 18, police said. He has been charged with „driving whilst over the prescribed limit, “ authorities said in a statement.
The 31-year-old announced last week that he is retiring from international play after serving as captain of England’s national team since 2014. The striker is the all-time leading scorer for the national club, registering 53 goals in 119 appearances from 2003-2016.
Rooney, who lives with his wife and three sons in nearby Prestbury, re-joined his former club Everton this summer after a 13-year tenure with Manchester United, which he had also captained since 2014.
Rooney has scored twice in his first three Premier League matches back with Everton. The team is scheduled to play at Manchester United on Sept. 17, one day before Rooney is due in court.
