A DZone researcher sat down with two open source though leaders to discuss the current state of open source and why there’s a need to educate young devs on OSS.
In response to the continued growth and adoption of Open Source technologies, the Linux Professional Institute (LPI) and the Open Source Entrepreneur Network (OSEN) are partnering to create a new open source mentorship program and a FOSS business certification. They will also work with partners to produce training programs to help participants meet the standards for certification.
The new Open Source Mentorship Program (OSMP) will match open source experts with technology professionals who seek guidance and knowledge on how to develop and manage open source technologies and business strategy. This will mark the first global program for open source mentorship with a career and business focus. Mentorship will encompass multiple areas of professional development for budding engineers and entrepreneurs looking to better understand open source communities and development, as well as the technology basis for newer and popular open source applications, tools, and platforms. This is especially critical where security is directly impacted, where a project or an initiative touches secure practices or is in need of focus.

To close existing gaps in education and training for technology managers and entrepreneurs, LPI and OSEN have agreed to collaborate on curriculum and content for those who wish to learn best practices in the areas of collaboration, community management, compliance, and governance. They welcome other partners in this endeavor.
The training and certification programs will be a work in progress with an expected delivery next year.
