President Trump questioned early Thursday why the Senate Intelligence Committee, which is probing Russian interference in the presidential election, wasn’t also targeting “Fake News Networks.”
“Why Isn’t the Senate Intel Committee looking into the Fake News Networks in OUR country to see why so much of our news is just made up-FAKE!” Trump tweeted.
His comments come a day after the committee’s chairman, Richard Burr, said the panel “has more work to do” to determine whether there was collusion between Russian officials and Team Trump during the 2016 presidential election.
“The committee continues to look into all evidence to see if there was any hint of collusion,” Burr said at a Capitol Hill news conference, where he stood alongside the committee’s top Democrat, Mark Warner of Virginia.
The news conference underscored that the probe is expanding and is not shying away from the question of collusion — which the president has repeatedly dismissed as a “hoax.”
Trump often attacks the media and targets certain networks or articles as “fake news.”
On Thursday, he continued to deny an NBC News report that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson called him a “moron” and had threatened to quit.
“Rex Tillerson never threatened to resign. This is Fake News put out by @NBCNews. Low news and reporting standards. No verification from me,” he wrote.
On Wednesday, he tweeted: “NBC news is #FakeNews and more dishonest than even CNN. They are a disgrace to good reporting. No wonder their news ratings are way down!”
Shortly after, Tillerosn held a press conference in which he insisted he had never considered quitting – though he refused to deny calling Trump a “moron.”
Trump also commented about his trip to Las Vegas, where he met with victims of the deadliest mass shooting in US history, as well as first responders who helped save their lives.
“So wonderful to be in Las Vegas yesterday and meet with people, from police to doctors to the victims themselves, who I will never forget!” he tweeted.
And he exulted about the stock market’s “ALL-TIME high.”
“Unemployment lowest in 16 years! Business and manufacturing enthusiasm at highest level in decades!” he tweeted.
