State-run media in North Korea said President Trump deserves the death penalty for calling the regime’s leader “short and fat” in a recent tweet and for canceling his visit to the country’s border with South Korea.
“The worst crime for which he can never be pardoned is that he dared [to] malignantly hurt the dignity of the supreme leadership,” said an editorial in ruling party newspaper Rodong Sinmun, according to the Guardian . “He should know that he is just a hideous criminal sentenced to death by the Korean people.”
The president and North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un engaged in a war of words during Trump’s swing through five Asian countries.
In a speech in South Korea, Trump referred to Kim as a “cruel dictator” and said he ruled the country “like a cult.”
Pyongyang responded by calling Trump a “warmonger,” adding that “reckless remarks by a dotard like Trump will never scare us or put a stop to our advance.”
Taking offense at the use of “dotard,” meaning a senile elderly person, Trump lashed out at Kim on Twitter.
“Why would Kim Jong-un insult me by calling me ‘old,’ when I would NEVER call him ‘short and fat?’ Oh well, I try so hard to be his friend – and maybe someday that will happen!” Trump posted last Saturday.
During Trump’s visit to Seoul, he had to cancel a visit to the demilitarized zone, the border between North and South Korea, after bad weather thwarted his attempt.
The editorial in Rodong Sinmun mocked Trump for aborting the trip.
“It wasn’t the weather,” it said. “He was just too scared to face the glaring eyes of our troops.”
