Catherine 2? Heck, we’d take Catherine HD. Bring it on, Atlus.
Catherine, the much-loved last-gen puzzle game, could definitely do with a sequel or at least a remaster – and it looks like we might get one.
Gematsu has pieced together a number of clues and hints suggesting that a Catherine announce is forthcoming.
Atlus itself made a Catherine tease back in August when providing an update on Atlus’s second team, Studio Zero, which is working on new RPG property Project Re-Fantasy. A little while later, the publisher said Studio Zero had a second game on the go, and that it would be revealed before we get a look at the new RPG.
That’s the hard fact stuff, and now we move into rumour territory. According to a reliable source of Japanese games industry rumours (and magazine leaks, although this doesn’t seem to be one), Atlus has a new Catherine game in the works.
According to the whispers, the new game wasn’t referred to as “Catherine 2”, it’s not clear whether it’s a sequel of some kind, or a remaster of the original. The source also said the game will not have DLC, which is an odd little detail.
Apparently this Catherine rumour has surfaced in Japan at least once already this year, and an announce is expected before the end of 2017. That would certainly be a nice way to end the year.
A spin-off from the Persona series (itself a branch of the sprawling Megami Tensei family), Catherine is an action puzzler set in the anxiety dreams of a commitment-phobic young man struggling to decide between his longterm girlfriend and a paramour met during a drunken fling. Sweating on what to text your chosen sweeties is as stressful as the climbing.
