Magic Leap today has finally announced that it will be shipping its first augmented reality headset in 2018. Called the Magic Leap One: Creator Edition, it will compete with Microsoft’s HoloLens.
After a few years of promises and teasers, Magic Leap has finally announced its first augmented reality (AR) headset, the Magic Leap One: Creator Edition. The new device is slated to begin shipping in 2018, and should offer a similar feature-set to Microsoft’s HoloLens.
Pricing hasn’t been announced just yet, but the package will include three pieces: the headset, a power pack, and a controller. Magic Leap says that the headset’s „lightfield photonics generate digital light at different depths and blend seamlessly with natural light to produce lifelike digital objects that coexist in the real world.“ It also uses soundfield audio because „to feel real, it must sound real.“
As you’d expect, users will be able to play AR games, as well as develop 3D objects, or just watch a video that’s pinned to the wall. You can even digitally connect with others in a physical space, which Magic Leap calls „collaboration for another dimension.“
The company says that in early 2018, a „fun backstory“ called Origins will arrive, which will also explain the direction that it’s headed. Also in early 2018, the Creator Portal will be opened up, offering access to the software development kit, which will include tools, documentation, and learning resources.
Obviously, Magic Leap will have more to share moving forward. You can find out more here.
