The Nokia 9, which is expected to be launched on January 19, will be HMD Global’s next flagship smartphone after the Nokia 8.
HMD Global this week announced the Android 8.0 Oreo beta build for the Nokia 5. Among the various new features to come to the handset following the beta update, some keen eyed testers noticed a new camera app that features support for both wide-angle and telephoto dual camera setups. However, since the Nokia 5 can’t make use of these features, their inclusion suggests that we could see a possible Nokia-branded phone in the near future that could feature a dual camera setup with a secondary wide-angle or zoom lens, according to a report.
As you may know by now, HMD Global is planning an event on January 19 where it is expected to launch the Nokia 9 or Nokia 8 (2018) and possibly the Nokia 6 (2018) as well. Interestingly, all the three smartphones are tipped to bear dual rear camera systems, which means chances are that at least one of them could feature a secondary wide-angle or telephoto lens. To recall, the company’s flagship Nokia 8 phone this year did come with dual rear cameras, but the secondary camera was a monochrome lens. HMD Global could be replacing the monochrome lens or decide to go with the same configuration with the Nokia 8 (2018) (if there is a 2018 version that is) and keep the telephoto or wide-angle lens for the Nokia 9, which is expected to be the company’s new premium flagship in 2018.
Nokia 5 users who beta tested the Android 8.0 Oreo update also noticed icons for shutter speed ranging from 1/500s to 1s and ISO 100 to 2000, which could be limited for the Nokia 5’s camera hardware. From the looks of it, the Nokia 9 could be the flagship smartphone that could bear a wide-angle or zoom lens, the latter of which will help improve bokeh images that is all the craze right now.

The Nokia 9, from what the rumours tell us, will be priced a little higher than the Nokia 8 and will sport high-end specifications. Its expected launch in January means the flagship will likely be powered by this year’s Snapdragon 835 SoC rather than the newly announced Snapdragon 845 chipset. Past rumours suggest the handset could sport a 5.5-inch QHD display and will be offered in two storage variants, one with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage and one with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage.
