30-year-old man was walking in middle of State Park Drive.
BAY CITY, MI — A 30-year-old man who was struck by two vehicles last weekend has died as a result of his injuries.
Bryan Smith, of Bay City, died Saturday, Jan. 20, at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, his mom, Tracey Smith, confirmed.
Smith, in the early morning of Sunday, Jan. 14, was hit by a vehicle while he was walking in the middle of State Park Drive near Wheeler Road. Shortly after, a second vehicle ran Smith over, police have said.
Drivers of both vehicles stayed at the scene and cooperated with police, but Lt. David Kaiser, with the Michigan State Police, said alcohol could be a contributing factor with the first driver, a 40-year-old woman, who struck Smith.
„This investigation is still very active,“ Kaiser said. „We did a blood draw on the driver and submitted it to the state police for analysis. Those lab results are still pending.“
Police have no reason to believe the second driver was under the influence of alcohol. Neither of the drivers were arrested, Kaiser said.
Smith was initially taken to McLaren Bay Region hospital in Bay City by ambulance and later airlifted to Detroit for treatment. He remained in a coma until he died on Saturday.
Tracey Smith said she isn’t sure if her son was drinking or why he was walking in the middle of the State Park Drive, which isn’t lit with streetlights. The mom said her son has dealt with mental health issues and had some legal troubles in the past, but was working to improve his situation.
He was employed as a foreman for Brand Roofing Midland and took care of his fiancee Danielle Facundo, her son and his two daughters.
A GoFundMe page was setup to help the family with funeral costs. A benefit dinner is also being held at Bemo’s Bar, 701 S. Madison Ave., beginning at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24.
