Epic Games has implemented a Paragon shutdown, killing the nascent MOBA in favor of Fortnite, though players will be getting back all of the money they invested into it.
The rumors about a Paragon shutdown due to the success of Fortnite have turned out to be true, according to a statement by the team released today. The MOBA has been announced to be shutting down this month, but players who have invested money into the game will get refunds.
Paragon first released back in 2016 on a pay to play early access model, and went fully free-to-play in February of last year. However, it seems that throughout those two years that the game’s been available it wasn’t as successful as Epic and the team wanted it to be.
Even though Paragon had been getting a steady stream of content and multiple players, it appears that the game never really got off the ground, and according to the press release the game didn’t really have a clear path. Even all of the various updates it was given apparently couldn’t save it, either.
In the meantime, Fortnite has really taken off, with players gravitating to its battle royale mode (that in itself was taken from the rampantly popular PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds) and selling over 500,000 copies in pre-order alone. More than ten million players are playing the game’s Battle Royale mode.
All of this means that Paragon was quickly shoved by the wayside with the success of the game, and even before now rumors were starting to circulate that Epic Games would implement the Paragon shutdown due to the success of Fortnite. Now we can see that these rumors are true.
While we’ll likely never see what the true potential of Paragon might have been, the Paragon shutdown will hopefully at least allow those developers to keep their jobs and be moved to other games, like Fortnite.
In order to get your refund from Epic, you can link your Epic account to the game and request a refund from there. Paragon servers will continue to run until April 26.
