The New York Times reported that Manchin told Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and other senators that “this place sucks,” appearing to refer to the Senate, before committing on Tuesday to file for re-election.
Speculation over whether Manchin would run has been swirling as his state has shifted farther to the right. President Trump won West Virginia by more than 40 points.
Manchin is considered one of the most conservative Democrats in the chamber, and has faced scrutiny from his party for refusing to sign onto a letter outlining Democrats’ policy points on tax reform.
