Adding further credence to rumors of a second-generation iPhone SE arriving later this year, a report on predicted global smartphone production growth for 2018 by market research firm TrendForce claims a new iPhone SE could be launched during the first half of the year and will be assembled by Taiwanese Apple supplier Wistron at its facility in Bengaluru. Previous rumors regarding the second-generation iPhone SE have in fact suggested that the device will be targeted mainly at the Indian market, where Apple has a negligible share of the mid-range smartphone market. Thanks to it being assembled locally in India, Apple should be able to price it very competitively.
While the TrendForce report doesn’t reveal any details regarding the hardware specifications of the handset, it is rumored that the second-generation iPhone SE will be largely similar to the original model. Major changes will be limited to the SoC inside, battery capacity, and perhaps the cameras as well. As for other new iPhones to be released this year, the report suggests Apple will work on improving the Face ID technology as well as increasing the screen-to-body ratio. Unlike last year, at least two new iPhones this year could sport an AMOLED display. We may see an increase in onboard storage as well this year.
