Chinese supermodel Liu Wen has been hit with a wave of online abuse from pro-Beijing keyboard warriors after she wished her followers a happy “Lunar New Year” – rather than "Chinese New Year".
C hinese supermodel Liu Wen has been hit with a wave of online abuse from pro-Beijing keyboard warriors after she wished her followers a happy “Lunar New Year” – rather than „Chinese New Year“.
Ms Liu,  who earned £4.6million ($6.5 million) in 2017, making her the eighth highest paid model in the world according to Forbes, posted the message on Instagram with a picture of herself with friend Wendi Murdoch during the annual festive season.
Many of the comments accused Mrs Liu of being unpatriotic to China, and of pandering to other Asian countries.
‚Lunar New Year‘ is a generic term used across Asia, where the annual festival is celebrated by millions of people in countries including Korea and Vietnam. Some believe that the term ‚Lunar New Year‘ – which began on February 16 – is overtaking ‚Chinese New Year‘ in the United States.
