A corrections officer at Lake Correctional Institution was arrested Sunday on domestic violence and false imprisonment charges, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
Jarvis Lamar Stewart, 38, has been with the Florida Department of Corrections since 2012.
“The actions of this officer are absolutely appalling, and we are taking appropriate disciplinary action,” department spokeswoman Michelle Glady said. She did not elaborate.
Stewart is accused of pushing his wife into a closet and punching and kicking her several times in the face, according to a press release.
She locked the door after Stewart left the room, but he got back inside, grabbed her by the shirt and threw her on the floor, deputies said.
“She told deputies she was begging him to stop,” the release said.
The victim was able to get away and call 911. She was taken to the hospital, where she was treated for her injuries.
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd called the allegations “shocking.”
“Thank God she wasn’t killed,” he said in a statement. “And thankfully, she was able to call for help. It’s hard to fathom this kind of behavior from someone we should be able to trust.”
Stewart was hired in 2012 as a corrections officer at Santa Rosa Correctional Institution in Milton, which is near Pensacola in the Panhandle. He transferred to Lake County about four years ago, according to FDOC.
Stewart was being held at the Polk County Jail.
