Sure, movies are good and they’ll be getting their due this Sunday at the 90th annual Academy Awards, but what about the clothes?
No worries, you can see the costumes worn on the big screen this year at Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising Museum and Galleries‘ exhibit, The Art of Motion Picture Costume Design.
Offering an up-close look at the exquisite work and detail that goes into making these pieces, the free exhibition is open now through April 7.
The nominees for excellence in costume design are represented and on display: Mark Bridges for “Phantom Thread.” Luis Sequeira for “The Shape of Water,’’ Consolata Boyle for “Victoria & Abdul’’ and Jacqueline Durran for both “Beauty and the Beast’’ and “Darkest Hour.”
Durran, nominated twice this year, depicts the transformation of an intelligent village girl into a lovely princess and a beast into a man worthy of her in “Beauty and the Beast’’ – and her flowing yellow ballgown worn by Emily Watson as Belle is a showstopper. In contrast, Durran captures early World War II England through the dress of actor Gary Oldman, who portrayed Winston Churchill in “Darkest Hour.’’
Bridges seemed to dive deep into the essence of fashion for his designs in “The Phantom Thread.” Sequeira, a first-time nominee for his work in “The Shape of Water,” offers crisp Cold War fashion in a sci-fi setting. And regal Queen Victoria, even in the black mourning dresses she wore after her beloved Prince Albert died, are displayed by Boyle in “Victoria & Abdul.’’
You’ll also see works from box office smashes “Wonder Woman’’ by Lindy Hemming, the jungle wear from “Jumanji” by Laura Jean Shannon, the rough-and-ready uniforms of World War I from “Dunkirk’’ by Jeffrey Kurland, and the ice-skating sequined leotards from “I, Tonya’’ by Jennifer Johnson. And don’t miss the uniforms from the latest “Star Wars,’’ the athletic tennis outfits seen in “Battle of the Sexes’’ and even the creepy looks from “It’’ by Janie Bryant.
As well, tradition dictates that works from the past year’s winner are displayed and saluted. Those belong to Colleen Atwood and the “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,’’ which won the coveted trophy last year for best in costume design.
The FIDM Museum and Galleries is located at 919 S. Grand Ave., Los Angeles. Hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Tuesday-Saturday.
