Technology has become so good it’s now possible to face-swap celebrities and porn stars, so Twitter is banning such creations, called “deepfakes.”
Bright minds have argued over whether artificial intelligence is full of promise or peril — today we’re talking about the peril: using deep machine learning to create fake porn.

Twitter allows porn on its platform, which it marks as sensitive material. But the company is drawing the line on pornographic videos that show people who didn’t agree to be in them.
“We will suspend any account we identify as the original poster of intimate media that has been produced or distributed without the subject’s consent,” a Twitter spokesperson told Motherboard . “We will also suspend any account dedicated to posting this type of content.”
Pornhub made the same move Twitter did Tuesday, for the same reason. That site puts deepfakes in the same category as revenge porn.
In December, Motherboard reported on an alarming trend: People were placing the faces of celebrities such as Gal Gadot, Scarlett Johansson, Taylor Swift and others in pornographic videos that looked extremely real.
Less than two months later, it’s not just a hobby anymore, with some Reddit dwellers offering deepfakes in exchange for bitcoin. The listings in the subreddit “deepfakeservice” include “Please make one of Selena Gomez” and “Requesting a dump of Trump pics for use.”
