The Special Olympics Winter Games drew 876 athletes this year to compete in six different sports.
ANN ARBOR, MI – Washtenaw County athletes were among nearly 900 competitors who gathered for Michigan’s Special Olympics Winter Games in the Traverse City area last week.
The annual competition drew 876 athletes this year to compete in six different sports: alpine skiing, cross country skiing, figure skating, snowboarding, snowshoeing and speed skating.
The Winter Games – which ran from Tuesday, Jan. 30 to Friday, Feb. 2 – is open to people age 8 and older who have an intellectual disability, a cognitive delay or a developmental disability.
The event is funded by Wertz Warriors, a snowmobiling group founded by former Detroit Tiger Vic Wertz to raise money for the Michigan Special Olympics Winter Games.
Area 20, which includes Washtenaw County, sent several athletes, their coaches and chaperones to the Winter Games last week.
Below is a list of area athletes and how they placed in each event, listed in alphabetical order by school/team. Independent athletes are listed at the end.
