Dropbox will now meld with the Google Cloud, bringing users „one step closer to a world where our work comes together.“ Dropbox says that it will soon start to roll out a series of integrations that aim to make it easier to use its cloud storage service more effectively with Google productivity and collaboration tools.
These integrations will include centralized content, which means that Dropbox users will be able to open, edit, save, share, and create Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides. Users will also be able to directly save content from Google’s office applications to their Dropbox account.
Dropbox Business admins will be able to manage Docs, Sheets, and Slide just as they can with any other content in Dropbox thanks to secure collaboration. Dropbox is also building native integrations for Gmail and Hangouts Chat, the latter of which exited beta this week. Dropbox wrote, „With them, you’ll be able to select files from your Dropbox account and send links directly from Gmail and Hangouts Chat. In addition, the Gmail add-on will allow you to display creation, modification, and last-accessed dates for linked files, while the Hangouts integration will add previews for linked files directly to your chats.“
Ritcha Ranjan, Director, Product Management at Google Cloud said, „Our goal is to make G Suite accessible no matter what tools you bring to work, and these integrations help our shared customers better collaborate in the tools they use every day. Working with Dropbox to make our apps work better together helps our customers focus their time on work that matters.“
Competition in the cloud storage space is heating up. Microsoft recently offered to give away OneDrive for Business to existing Dropbox, Google, and Box users.
