A Central Michigan University student allegedly used his father’s gun to fatally shoot his parents when they came to pick him up for spring break, according to a new report.
James Eric Davis Jr., a sophomore at the school, opened fire early Friday with a weapon registered to his dad, James Davis Sr., a part-time police officer in the Chicago suburb of Bellwood, The Chicago Tribune reported Saturday.
The parents had come to retrieve their son after campus cops told them the 19-year-old was behaving erratically and “not really making a lot of sense,” campus police Chief Bill Yeagley said.
The day before the shooting, Davis Jr. told a campus police officer stationed in his dorm that he was scared someone he knew had gotten a gun and was going to hurt him, Yeagley said, according to the Detroit Free Press.
Cops obtained a name of the person Davis claimed to fear, and reviewed footage of the pair riding in an elevator and laughing together. He was determined to be no threat.
Hours later, Davis Jr. was spotted in a hallway with suitcases and bags, and his behavior was “not reasonable or logical,” Yeagley said. The student was briefly hospitalized as a result. Cops believed Davis Jr. odd behavior may have involved drugs, according to a report.
Davis Sr. and his wife, Diva Davis, picked up their son from the hospital early Friday and brought him back to the Mount Pleasant campus with the intention of bringing him home for spring break. Davis opened fire inside the dorm and fled, sparking an hours-long manhunt as panic spread across the campus.
It’s unclear if Davis Sr. brought the weapon with him to campus or if Davis Jr. already had it with him. Yeagley noted the younger Davis was spotted on video toting the gun in the dorm’s parking lot before walking into the dorm.
Davis was spotted on a train passing through the campus shortly after midnight Saturday, the university said in a statement. He was taken into custody without incident.
