“The View” talked about the comeback of the popular sitcom “Roseanne” on Thursday, and speculated about what led to its huge ratings as Joy Behar called President Donald Trump a “ratings whore.”
As the panel talked about the 18 million people who tuned in to see the reboot of the classic sitcom, which features the original cast, everyone offered their take on what prompted the massive numbers.
Joy Behar speculated that the show’s popularity stems from its portrayal of a family divided by political differences.
“They plugged into what’s going on in the country right now which is that in families when you’re a Trump voter versus a Trump hater there’s a lot of friction and a lot of fights within the family,” Behar said.
But she quickly went after Trump herself, shifting the conversation to Trump’s congratulatory call to Roseanne Barr, the star of the show, to praise her return to television and the successful premiere.
“That’s what the show was about and it caused an uproar in the ratings,“ Behar concluded. ”[Trump] called Roseanne to congratulate her because, you know, he’s a ratings whore, you know that. He loves ratings.“
“You know, he may be lousy for women, immigrants and the economy maybe, we’ll see, but he’s really good for TV. Our numbers are up too,” she added.
As Behar’s cohosts giggled along with her criticism of Trump, others offered their theories about why the show is still so popular. Sunny Hostin argued that it’s all about nostalgia for the good old days, while Meghan McCain explained that it appeals to the same people who voted for Trump during the 2016 presidential election.
“I thought it was actually a really pitch-perfect take on what a lot of real Trump supporters feel,” McCain said, explaining that the show takes up the same issues that Trump has focused on during his presidency, including jobs and the economy.
“Most of the time we just see how Trump supporters have horns and they’re horrible and they’re ruining the country,” McCain went on, suggesting that its refreshing to see Trump supporters portrayed in a good light.
