Democrats and Republicans broke down the political divide to offer support to the Bush family after spokesman Jim McGrath announced former first lady Barbara Bush’s health was failing and she will not seek medical treatment.
In a statement, McGrath announced that the 92-year-old will “focus on comfort care” following a recent series of hospitalizations.
He called her a “rock in the face of her failing health” and people from both sides of the aisle also offered their thoughts and praise for the former first lady.
“Guys, let’s put partisanship and political gamenship (sic) aside, and please pray for Barbara Bush and her family,” CNN contributor Ana Navarro wrote on Twitter .
“She is a special lady who touched so many people’s lives and made our country and our world a little better,” Navarro added.
Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley shared that she was sending prayers for Barbara, who she labeled, “a woman of great faith, great strength, and an unwavering love of country.”
“Our country is better because of former First Lady Barbara Bush,” she concluded.
“As a Democrat, a former Obama Appointee, and American, this breaks my heart. First Lady Barbara Bush is the definition of class,” Former Associate Director of Public Engagement at the White House Ryan Robison tweeted.
He continued, “I hope she feels all the love she deserves in these tender moments with her family. America loves you, Madame First Lady.”
“The View” co-host Meghan McCain tweeted that she was sending her love and prayers to the family.
“Barbara Bush is a woman of great strength, patriotism and an iconic first lady of our times who has touched and inspired countless lives,” she added.
“Real thoughts and real prayers,” former White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations for President Barack Obama Alyssa Mastromonaco wrote on Twitter .
Fox News‘ Martha McCallum tweeted that Barbara and her husband are a “shining example of love. Gracious, but fierce. Steadfast, but fun. Devoted.”
“As always, Barbara Bush is a comfort to her friends & family teaching us all how to live full of faith, love & humor,” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) wrote on Twitter . “Praying that she is comfortable & send love to President Bush & their family.”
Fox News‘ Dana Perino, who served as former President George W. Bush’s press secretary, explained that Barbara has “taught us all so much.”
“Courageous, joyful, patriotic, faithful, charitable, studious, hilarious,” she tweeted . “There are not enough characters to describe her character.”
“We join Texans across the state in keeping the First Lady and the entire Bush family in our thoughts,” Democratic Senate candidate Beto O’Rouke wrote .
McGrath didn’t elaborate on the health condition ailing Barbara, but both she and her husband, former President George H. W. Bush, have been in and out of the hospital over the last few years.
