PUBG Creator, Brendan Greene, knows a few things about player feedback and how important it can be when it comes to developing a game as popular as PlayerUnknown’s Battleground. You don’t want to upset the community you’ve worked so hard to build, especially one you want to invest in for twenty years. However, it has recently come to light that Greene does, in fact, have something that he and the haters do not agree on. That thing, you may wonder, is the topic of the red zone and the overwhelming hatred players have of it.
For those who may not play PUBG, don’t worry, we’ll explain. The ‚red zone‘ is a marked area in the game that is targeted by bombs. These bombs rain down on the player, often killing them instantly if they are not in a building or hiding under another sort of structure. Red zones can really ramp up the tension during a game, particularly when it comes to players being unable to hear anything during moments when bombs rain down all around them.
Which is totally the point, according to Greene. In an interview with Eurogamer, Greene had this to say: „And people say there’s no reason to it but it provides audio cover, it really looks cool when you’re fighting in it.“ He went on further to say something that may have a few PUBG fans seething. „And really, you shouldn’t be dying to the red zone. If you’re dying to the red zone then, I’m sorry but you’re not a very good player.“
Ouch, talk about putting it bluntly. It may be a harsh statement, but it’s one Greene is sticking to despite all the backlash that the red zone has against it. We can hardly blame him considering that the zone is useful and, well, it is actually pretty easy to avoid the bombs. However, even if we can see where Greene is coming from, the PUBG creator does acknowledge that „if there is an outpouring of hate towards it“ then removing the red zone would be an option he’d be open to.
