Colbert thinks Mueller has managed to turn a key figure in Trump’s past Cinco de Mayo festivities
Friday was a surprisingly quiet day for the Donald Trump White House — or maybe not all that surprisingly, since everybody in America kinda needed a day of relative calm after the sheer insanity of the past few days of Rudy Giuliani visit to a bunch of Fox News circuit. In any case, Stephen Colbert’s monologue on Friday night’s episode of “The Late Show” was a lot calmer than it had been the last few days as well.
Colbert opened the show by talking about how odd it is that Trump stopped celebrating Cinco de Mayo once he became president. And Colbert thinks it probably has something to do with special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.
“I hope everybody has big plans for the weekend because tomorrow is Cinco de Mayo,” Colbert said. “It’s the holiday where we Americns celebrate Mexican culture the way we celebrate all cultures in America — by getting hammered on culturally appropriate liquor,” Colbert joked. “Please celebrate responsibly.”

Then Colbert transitioned to his first Trump joke of the night, in which he speculates that Mueller is to blame. Specifically, because someone Trump used to spend every Cinco de Mayo with is now a cooperating witness against him.
“For the second year in a row, the White House is not celebrating Cinco de Mayo, which is sad because Trump used to celebrate the holiday in the traditional way — by posing with a Trump Tower taco bowl,” Colbert joked. “But that was two years ago, and now that taco bowl is cooperating with Robert Mueller.”
To really rub the joke in, Colbert had a big pun to deliver after the audience cheers and applause subsided.
“Yes, I hear it’s spilling the beans.”
