Google has announced an update for its Wear OS, which will see new features being implemented on smartwatches that run on the OS. Majority of the features in the new OS involves Google’s Smart Assistant. This will enable users to now utilise skills with voice control, much like while using smartphones.
The smart assistant will comes with audible answers, smart responses and actions that the user can control hands free. This is considered a game changer, as users needn’t have to read out responses on the small screens that the wearable devices sport.
Previously known as Android Wear, Google had implemented the Google Assistant on the Wear OS last year, however with very limited set of skills and functions. Now the latest update will see some major upgrades that will let users control their device without having to tap it. Much like the smartphone, users would have to first register their voice with the assistant, as this will be the familiar voice that Google Assistant will automatically detect. Users can pose queries or convey instructions to the Assistant to utilise one of its skills. Answers to queries will be transmitted through the device’s speakers or a headphone that is connected.
The feature is, as of now, available in the US, Europe and Australia and is expected to hit other parts of the globe in the near future. By this move, Google has expanded the range of devices, which support their Smart Assistant. Currently the Smart Assistant features heavily on mobile phones and tablets that are powered by the Android OS and Google Home products, Google’s range of smart speakers. Google claims to have designed over 1 million actions for the Google Assistant. Actions are also integrated, wherein the user can issue actions to control connected devices such as a thermostat for the user’s home.
Apart from this, Google is also integrating another feature which offers smart suggestions on devices running on the Wear OS. In case an user asks the Assistant a question, the device will answer the question and will subsequently display a set of related questions or relevant information.
