Delaying the upgrade might be a smart move for gamers
While at this moment these problems aren’t as widespread as others, we’re seeing more and more users complaining of FPS drops after upgrading to the Windows 10 April 2018 Update.
This happens on systems where the most recent graphics drivers are installed without any other changes from the previous Windows version, so the upgrade to the April 2018 Update is pretty much the only one to blame for the bug.
“Skyrim Special Edition used to run at a consistent 57-60 fps for me, even outdoors. Now I’m struggling to break 45. I made zero changes to my graphics settings or mods, made sure all drivers were updated and CPUs unparked, and re-applied all the recommended Nvidia Inspector settings,’ one user explains in a discussion thread on reddit.
While staying away from the Windows 10 April 2018 Update or downgrading in case you already installed it is the best way to avoid such problems, it looks like there’s at least one workaround that could help until Microsoft comes up with a fix.
Enabling Windows 7 compatibility mode for each gaming process and disabling full-screen optimizations is believed to increase FPS, even though the performance still doesn’t reach the same level as before the upgrade.
Microsoft is expected to publish a large cumulative update for Windows 10 April 2018 Update tomorrow on Patch Tuesday, along with the typical security fixes that the company ships every month. At this point, however, it’s not know which bugs are going to be addressed with this patching cycle, but further updates could be addressed later this month with other cumulative updates.
