Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced on Wednesday that the Senate will vote to confirm President Donald Trump’s nominee for the Supreme Court after Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement earlier in the day.
Speaking on the Senate floor, McConnell said, „The Senate stands ready to fulfill its constitutional role by offering advice and consent on President Trump’s nominee to fill this vacancy. We will vote to confirm Justice Kennedy’s successor this fall.“

The White House released a statement following Kennedy’s announcement, writing: „Justice Kennedy has been a tireless voice for individual rights and the Founders’ enduring vision of limited government. His words have left an indelible mark not only on this generation, but on the fabric of American history.“
President Trump reacted to the news by saying, „He is a man that I’ve known for a long time and a man that I’ve respected for a long time…. He is a man who is displaying great vision.“
Trump also said that the search for the new justice will occur „immediately,“ noting that his administration will be selecting from a list of 25 candidates.
