After the E3 reveal of the Resident Evil 2 remake, gamers assemble comparison screens between the original and the remake, showing just how good the graphical upgrade is.
Earlier today, Sony and Capcom unveiled the latest footage from the Resident Evil 2 remake, wowing audiences with the upgraded visuals. The faithfulness to the game’s original appearance and character designs is now even more apparent, as there are now comparison screenshots from the original PSX game and the latest trailer.
The Resident Evil 2 comparisons, seen below, are surprisingly faithful to the original game. For example, the entrance to the Raccoon City police station has remained primarily identical to how it looked in the original, except of course for its new coat of polish courtesy of the latest console generation’s capabilities. In another shot, one of the crowded hallways series protagonist Leon Kennedy has to maneuver down looks as claustrophobic as ever, albeit with a few small changes.
The most impressive updates are of course Leon himself, alongside his fellow police officer Marvin Branagh. Both characters are stunningly rendered in hyper-realistic visuals, which is especially impressive for Marvin, since he was a fairly minor character in the original game that appeared as a blocky mess of polygons.
Leon looks fairly different than his other game appearances, but it seems to primarily be in an effort to show how much younger he was during the events of RE2. Furthermore, fellow Resident Evil alumn Chris Redfield’s appearance was so different in Resident Evil 7 that it stirred up debate on whether he was the real Redfield or not. Cosmetic changes were expected for Leon, though it seems the developer found a good middle ground for his appearance that’s unlikely to stir up the same kind of questions.
With Resident Evil 2 arriving so early in 2019, it’s not a big surprise that the game already looks as polished as it does. However, gamers haven’t had so much as a glimpse of the game prior to this, with Capcom remaining tight-lipped about the game’s progress and release date leading into Sony’s E3 showing. While gameplay will make up a large part of how gamers ultimately feel about the title, it would appear that at least visually, the remake is in very good hands, as the original Resident Evil 2 director Hideki Kamiya claimed.
Resident Evil 2 is set to release on January 25,2019 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
