On Wednesday, it was announced that the upcoming movie “Reagan,” a biography of the 40 th president of the United States, will star actor Dennis Quaid.
According to The Hollywood Reporter (THR), the film will cover Reagan’s life from his childhood to his final days as he fought Alzheimer’s disease. The young Reagan will be played by David Henrie of the Wizards of Waverly Place; the older Reagan will be played by Quaid. Oscar-winning actor Jon Voight will also appear in the film.
The film will be produced by Mark Joseph, who associate produced Max Rose, and will be executive produced by Ralph Winter of the X-Men Franchise. It was written by Howie Klausner, based on two biographies from author Paul Kengor, and will be directed by Sean McNamara, who directed The Miracle Season.
Joseph stated, „Dennis was always our first choice. He’s one of the great actors of our time.” Quaid said, “Reagan was a fascinating and multifaceted human being and this movie captures his humanity. We’re making a movie for Republicans and Democrats alike since Reagan transcends politics. I can’t wait to get started.“
Joseph told THR he met with 50 of Reagan’s friends, confidantes and cabinet members, including his pastor and the surgeon who saved Reagan’s life after he was shot by John Hinckley Jr. Former Attorney General Edwin Meese, a close friend of Reagan’s, will be an advisor on the film.
THR adds, “The film is also expected to explore Reagan’s time as governor of California, his role in the destruction of the Berlin Wall and his final days dealing with Alzheimer’s disease. It will also delve a bit into John Hinckley Jr., whose obsession with actress Jodie Foster led to his attempted assassination of the Republican president in 1981.
Quaid, 64, has been starring on Amazon’s Fortitude; he recently starred in I Can Only Imagine, a Christian film that has earned $83 million on a $7 million production budget. He first came to fame in the brilliant 1979 Breaking Away, which was nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars; his extensive career incudes the films Frequency and Far from Heaven. The latter earned him the Best Supporting Actor award from the New York Film Critics Circle.
