On Tuesday, President Donald Trump celebrated the Supreme Court upholding his controversial travel ban on Muslim-majority nations:
SUPREME COURT UPHOLDS TRUMP TRAVEL BAN. Wow!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 26,2018
In a statement released from the White House, Trump praised the ruling as a “tremendous victory for the American People and the Constitution.”
“The Supreme Court has upheld the clear authority of the president to defend the national security of the United States,” he added.
He said that he would, as president, continue defending the “sovereignty, safety, and security of the American people, and fight for an immigration system that serves the national interests of the United States and its citizens.”
“In this era of worldwide terrorism and extremist movements bent on harming innocent civilians, we must properly vet those coming into our country,” he also said.
Trump, as IJR previously reported, faced some intense opposition to his travel ban. Tuesday’s ruling, Trump said, wasn’t just a victory for the country, it was a vindication for his administration.
“This ruling is also a moment of profound vindication following months of hysterical commentary from the media and Democratic politicians who refuse to do what it takes to secure our border and our country,” Trump said.
His statement came as Democrats and media figures piled on the Supreme Court’s ruling, arguing it affirmed discrimination:
History will look back on today’s #SCOTUS decision as one where the court endorsed discrimination. #NoMuslimBanEver https://t.co/2sVdnbbr2I

Remember, many SERIOUS PEOPLE said liberals should not oppose Gorsuch because he was qualified and fair
He just provided the deciding vote on a travel ban targeted at a specific religion.
Trump explicitly called it a Muslim Ban
This leaves a permanent stain on the nation

Rep. Keith Ellison reacts to the travel ban ruling: “As long as [Trump] puts a very thin veneer of national security on top of all that discrimination and racism, they will buy it. In other words, as long as a pig has some lipstick on it, it’s fine.“ https://t.co/TCZUC1dYCN pic.twitter.com/S4ad1mAa3z
