LOS ANGELES (AP) – A 10-ton bronze sculpture that stood for a half-century in Los Angeles has been moved – carefully – about 100 feet (30 meters) across a downtown square as part of a $40 million renovation.
A giant crane on Saturday hoisted the Jacques Lipchitz work, Peace on Earth, to its new home on the west side of Music Center Plaza. The move took about 15 minutes.
Peace on Earth was commissioned in 1966 at the founding of the Music Center, home to performance halls including the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, which for years hosted the Academy Awards ceremony.
The sculpture portrays a dove descending to Earth with the spirit of peace, symbolized by the Madonna standing inside a canopy.
The plaza renovation will include five new buildings including a welcome center and restaurant.
